A cult classic

According to the publisher, Seconds is a cult classic. I must belong to the wrong cult because I wasn't familiar with it until it appeared in a new edition.

Should Wilson leave his life behind? Should he start again? He gets along with his wife but passion, even affection, has long disappeared. He rarely hears from his daughter. His job at the bank provides him with a comfortable living but its routine nature is less than satisfying. It's a difficult decision to make but, as someone tells him, "there never was a struggle in the soul of a good man that wasn't hard."

These questions arise when Wilson (who isn't yet known by that name) gets a call from a dead friend who recommends a service that offers its clients a rebirth. Wilson doesn't quite understand what the service is all about, but his friend arranges an appointment and Wilson keeps it. The firm provides Wilson with a faked death complete with a corpse that passes as his own, then gives him a new appearance, occupation (artist, complete with a fine arts degree, portfolio, and solid reviews), and residence.

Reinventing oneself as a completely new person, leaving the old self behind, is an inviting fantasy, but Wilson learns (and this, I think, is the story's point) that it isn't as pleasant as we imagine it to be. It isn't easy to "cast off all the old associations and memories on which he had become accustomed to depend." In fact, once Wilson is "dead," he defies the rules by investigating his old life as others saw him. Unsurprisingly, he's not pleased with what he learns, or with the knowledge that he is so little missed. The fate of those, like Wilson, who don't follow the rules, who don't adjust well to rebirth, is the story's kicker.

If Seconds is indeed a cult classic, I can understand why. Soylent Green is something of a cult classic for similar reasons: there's a sort of irony in the surprise ending and the story can be seen as a commentary on the true value of human life. Seconds sends additional messages: Dreams don't always come true, particularly when the dream isn't yours to begin with. And: If you want to abandon your life because you've made a botch of it and start over, what makes you think you'll do any better the second time around? As with Soylent Green, you need to accept a certain measure of implausibility to enjoy Seconds, but enjoy it I did. I guess that means I've joined a new cult.

Originally released in 1963, and made into a movie starring Rock Hudson in 1966, David Ely's short science fiction book has been rereleased in 2013, and feels destined to be remade into a scifi summer blockbuster. While at times the novel feels very dated, there are many themes in the book that resonate with today's reader and everything going on in the world.

Antiochus Wilson has the classic sixties life: a decent job which he has done well in and climbed the ranks, making a decent wage; at home he has a wonderful and dutiful wife; a daughter who has grown up and is living elsewhere now; but he is bored with his life. He has a couple of hobbies, like painting sometimes in the garage, or taking his boat out, but otherwise he's just fed-up with everything. So when he gets the address and note that will change his life, he jumps at the opportunity.

Skipping out of work on lunch, he heads to the clandestine address on the other side of town. He finds himself in a strange warehouse where a stranger tells him to put on overalls and dirty himself up a bit. Then they head to another destination incognito and so starts the first minute of his new life. Antiochus "Tony" Wilson is being given a second, new life. Agreeing on an expensive package, he is killed off; a perfect cadaver left in his place, while he undergoes reconstructive surgery and comes out a new, handsomer man. A new life is created for him: a successful artist, with a new home in California. He is famous, people love him, especially the young models who post nude for him. What could be better?

Except Antiochus Wilson, for some reason, can't let go of his past; can't let go of his wife, or his daughter whom he rarely saw.

Seconds, in some ways, feels like a modern James Bond movie, where women play minor secondary characters, serving the men, yet everything else feels current and meaningful. The book plays around with the concept of identity and who one really is, and the true power of family. The company that gives these men second, new lives was conceived as a brilliant breakthrough that every man would want, but that seems not to be the case.

Are you frustrated with your life? Tired of your boring, mundane existence? Ever wish you could chuck everything and start over? Seconds is the story of a man who does just that, and lives to regret it.

Seconds' protagonist (whom we know only by his adopted name of Wilson) procures the exclusive services of a mysterious organization, which, for a price, creates new lives for its customers. After carefully arranging the demise or disappearance of a client, this organization then surgically alters that client's appearance. After a long period of convalescence and physical training, the client is provided with a new identity and alternative lifestyle.

Most clients quickly adapt to their new lives, but some, like Wilson, have a harder time. Wilson longs for the life he gave up, but finds, upon investigation, that he is not really missed by his family and acquaintances. The organization, which depends upon secrecy for survival, cannot tolerate such backsliding and brings Wilson back into the fold. Eventually realizing that his old life is in fact over, Wilson blithely resigns himself to the new, only to discover he has forfeited both. The brutal ending, while expected, is still shocking, primarily because Wilson doesn't see it coming.

Seconds is a tight, disturbing little book, one which proves the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." After finishing, you'll probably conclude that your present life, no matter how humdrum or challenging it may be, is not so bad after all.

excellent book on how Quran puts forth argument

This book is an excellent starting point on how The Quran puts forth its arguments, based on words, concepts, formal logic, examples, reasoning etc. Some of it is technical, but it is nicely written.

A Big Hand for the Little Lady

If you've read Syrus Durham's previous sci-fi novel, "Short Time", then you're already aware that he knows how to generate suspense. With his follow-up novel "Desperate Measures" he uses a similar premise: a hard-driven scientist by the name of Veronica Logan is inadvertently reduced to a tiny fraction of her original size as a result of a revolutionary new process she's developed. This time, however, he adds some important additional elements to the mix: humor, warmth, romance and sterling character development. The result is a moving and completely absorbing fanciful tale that not only doesn't overstay its welcome but might even leave you wishing that you'd had the opportunity to spend a little more time with its (mostly) personable and appealing cast.

Readers whose hearts are set to racing by terms like "reversed polarity of the neutron flow" and involved discussions of how reduction in height relates mathematically to corresponding loss of mass will get their fill of that sort of thing here. Likewise, readers with a taste for eroticism that, shall we say, falls somewhat outside of the norm---one tender scene vividly answers Veronica's question "How would they without her getting hurt?" as she ponders spending time alone with her now-much-larger husband---will find that here, too. People who couldn't care less about any of the above will still be in luck, though, because this is, first and foremost, a touching love story between Veronica and her estranged husband Derek, and they're a couple well worth rooting for. Durham neatly and effectively fills in the backstory of the couple's charming courtship, marriage and eventual estrangement through flashbacks that are interspersed throughout the story. The factors that serve to tear them apart are all too common, even as the circumstances that help bring them back together border on the magical. As Veronica and Derek are forced to make accommodations for the changes in their relative sizes, they likewise become reacquainted with each other emotionally, both of them shifting their priorities and fighting their way towards meeting each other somewhere in the middle of the wide gulf that's grown between them. It's an extremely clever parallel.

There are dark forces at work conspiring against them, though, and midway through the story another impediment presents itself to come between them. To spoil the fun by giving away its identity would be unthinkable; suffice to say it's most unique and makes an already complicated situation exponentially more difficult for the pair. While the peril that little Veronica is sometimes placed in during the course of the story is truly harrowing---especially during an explosive, action-packed climax---the author clearly feels highly protective of her, warts and all, making this an exhilarating adventure rather than an oppressive ordeal. Often poignant but never wallowing in moroseness, with one running gag that verges on the broadly comic but doesn't lapse into silliness, this tale expertly hits all the right notes.

Against all expectations everything is resolved in a highly satisfying manner, and Durham ties everything together with a closing sentiment that manages to be both clever and wonderfully heartfelt. Most highly recommended.

A very gripping story. I'm a big fan of the format this story is told in. A great running gag along with surprises you never see coming. Awesome character development gets you into the cast as few stories ever do with as much success. If sci-fi suspense is your thing, then this is the book for you.

Looking forward to the next work by this Author.

I purchased this book based upon the strength of Syrus's work in Short Time. I finished Short Time early this week and moved onto Desperate Measures and while I'm not a fan of romance novels the fact this story is based upon a common Sci-Fi idea is enough to hook me. The way that Syrus explores the story and the narrative help you to believe that it's entirely possible, in as much possibility that teleporation is possible, can work in this universe. The subtle head nods to other sci-fi works certainly helps this story.

That said I can't give this a 5 star rating like I did with Short Time. There are a few grammatical issues and POV changes that are just clunky and can jar the reader a bit. Not to say this isn't bad. All the characters as believable and likable after their own fashion. It has come a long way compared to the problems I had with Short Time, that said I really want to give this book a 4.5 rating and not the 4 that Amazon forces me to use.

If you are a fan of suspenseful, dark sci-fi with a romantic aspect I believe this story is for you.

Finally able to treat chalazia

After seeing my friend suffering from blepharitis and chalazia for 3 years, it looks like I finally found the perfect gift book that enable her to get rid of all the bumps in her eyelids. Nothing has worked before but after reading this book and applying the treatments she has started seeing a change. It is still early but the chalazion growths are definitely getting smaller, less irritated and red. I hope that with time all of her blepharitis symptoms will be reduced as well. I can highly recommend this book. Easy to read and very encouraging.

disappointing and repetitive.

Not a lot of info in here that isn't found all over the Internet. Most of what is said in the book is repeated many, many times (to the extent that I thought I had lost my place and was re-reading a section). I'm very disappointed, wish I hadn't spent the money. This "book" needs a good editor and to be cut down to a pamphlet. Writing is amateurish and doesn't actually provide useful conclusions.

This book was so very helpful with my eye problem, even more so than the info the Doctor gave me. It was great having someone already do all of the research into the disease and the products available.
