K-Gr. 2. This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a single droplet of water as it moves and changes throughout one year. With a double-page spread for each month, the story traces the droplet's journey from snowflake to mountain pond to underground stream to river to irrigation system to cloud to reservoir to city water system to bathroom sink to drain pipe to cloud and back to snowflake. A few sentences of text on each spread comment on the droplet's form, travels, and surroundings. More effective and memorable, though, are the subtle hues and varied compositions of Waldman's paintings in this unusually handsome presentation of the water cycle. Carolyn Phelan

One snowflake's path around the world

The complex topic of hydrology is simplified here so that children (and adults) can easily understand it. In calendar style, we follow the path of one particular snowflake falling on a mountain. Over the course of twelve months, it becomes a droplet of water that melts into a stream, passes through an agricultural irrigation system, lifts up into a summer fog, drops into a reservoir, flows through city water pipes, drifts in the ocean, rises into a cloud and once again becomes a snowflake falling on a mountain. We come full circle and can start the story all over again from the beginning of the book.

Neil Waldman's paintings brightly convey the realistic journey and are colorful, clean and beautiful to boot. "The Snowflake" is a nice addition to elementary school and nature center shelves, as well as a good read-aloud storytime selection that will prove thought-provoking to the young.

Great concept. Story a bit bland.

I really liked the concept of following a snowflake (turned droplet) around the water cycle. However - I found the reading a bit dry. The story is presented as a month by month snippet , i.e. January, then February, and so forth. I felt like the story could have been spruced up a bit - maybe by giving the snowflake a bit more of a "persona" to make it fun for young readers. I also thought it could have gone into more of an explanation about what was happening, rather than just saying "it evaporated." I don't think my kids will be requesting to hear this one again and again. Incidentally, I am a very science-y person and it would not have taken much to interest me about the water cycle... so in sum: Nice concept. Boring reading.

Great Non- Fiction for Children!

I am a first grade teacher in a district that has adopted the Common Core Standards- which means that there is a push for the use of more non-fiction texts in classroom instruction. So this past school year, during our unit on making inferences, I decided to find a non-fiction text to introduce the concept instead of the fiction I have used for the same purpose in previous years. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone- science and reading in one!
This book is an amazing non-fiction text to teach inferring (especially making inferences to determine word meanings) and many other reading and science concepts. It basically follows a snowflake through the seasons, discussing how the snowflake changes with the seasons and weather. (i.e- from a snowflake in January to a water droplet in February-then briefly refreezing, becoming a water droplet again, becoming ground water, evaporating, becoming rain, etc.) The text is written in a way that is easy for younger students to understand, but peppered with vocabulary to challenge them to infer meaning through the use of context clues. The illustrations are wonderful and engaging as well, offering supporting context clues for students that are visual learners.
My students loved this book and often asked to "check it out" of our classroom library during independent reading time.
I recommend this book to parents, teachers, or anyone that just enjoys great children's non-fiction! I will use this book again with our inferring unit this year.

About the Author
Dr. Andrew Wiest was born in Chicago, but raised in Hattiesburg. After attending the University of Southern Mississippi for his undergraduate and masters degrees, Dr. Wiest went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1990. Specializing in the study of World War I and Vietnam, Dr. Wiest has served as a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Warfighting Strategy in the United States Air Force Air War College. Since 1992 Dr. Wiest has been active in international education, leading a study abroad program on World War II to London and Normandy each summer, and developing the award-winning Vietnam Study Abroad Program. Dr. Wiest lives in Hattiesburg with his wife Jill and their two children Abigail and Luke.

Chris McNab is a writer and editor based in South Wales, UK. He has produced over 25 books on military history, martial arts, survival, and other topics, and has written extensively on firearms, his titles including: Weapons of War: AK47, 20th Century Small Arms, The Encyclopedia of Combat Techniques, Living off the Land, and The Illustrated History of the Vietnam War. Chris is a lifelong advocate of shooting sports and specializes in sporting clays and field shooting around the UK and abroad.

The American Vietnam War in one book...

The best general account of our war in Vietnam that I have read. I recommend it without reservation. Excellent photographs, most of which I have not seen elsewhere, and a surprisingly low price. I served as an infantryman in Vietnam, and I am gratified to find an even-handed and understanding narrative by two noted military writers. Thank you, Dr. McNab and Dr. Wiest!

Mediocre

I was let down by this book which I purchased thinking that it will contain new information and unpublished photographs. Neither is true: the text is very poor in hard data, the chapters are too short, the maps average and most of the photographs have been published many times over the years. The serious student of the Vietnam War should better spent his or her money in the old but excellent multi-volume series of Boston Publishing "The Vietnam Experience" to get a wealth of photos and the analysis also. As far as the strategy of Vietnam War is concerned, Palmer's "Summon of the Trumpets" is unsurpassed.

Sean Morrissey is a Guardian, chosen to wield a magical sword that will send the souls of dead Shifters into the afterlife. Though he is respected for what he does, his position has left him longing for a mate he can share his life with. When he hears that the half-Fae, half-Shifter Andrea Gray is being abused in her pack, Sean mate-claims Andrea without meeting her in order to bring her into his Shiftertown in Austin where she will be safe. While helping Andrea, Sean is given the chance to finally have a mate but what he didn't expect was to instantly fall head over heals for the sexy and mouthy Lupine.

True Andrea needs Sean and the rest of the Morrissey clan in order to escape her old pack and the abuse of a Shifter she will not mate but she is far from weak. She will not cower behind Sean when things become difficult and will let her opinions be known. I love when a heroine has a backbone and Andrea definitely does. Sean gets frustrated with Andrea when she refuses to hide and not go to work when humans start shooting bars and restaurants that Shifters are known to frequent. Everything in Sean calls for him to protect his Andrea, even though she hasn't officially accepted his mate-claim. What I liked about Sean was that he took care of Andrea but knew when it was a losing battle and did his best to just make sure she didn't get hurt. I love my alpha males but sometimes they cross over the line into being obnoxious but Sean knew when to be protective and when to give Andrea some space.

I liked Liam (hero in Pride Mates) but I loved Sean. Sean has Liam's devotion to his family and pack, strength and street smarts but there is a sweeter side to Sean that I could not get enough of. Unlike Liam, Sean didn't push the woman he wanted as his mate away. He wanted to always be around her and there was a sexy playfulness between him and Andrea and I didn't get from Liam and his mate Kim.

In Primal Bonds there are humans violently attacking Shifters and the reason goes beyond just hate for their kind. Alliances between enemies are made with a deadly outcome in mind. I really liked that the story kept changing a little here and there as the book went along. It kept things from getting boring and too predictable. There is also a side story between Dylan, Sean's father and Glory, Andrea's aunt. They've been an unofficial couple for a while but Dylan has not been able to emotionally move on from his mate who he lost a century ago. Glory loves Dylan but no longer will settle for what little Dylan is willing to give. Things get heated and heart wrenching between the two and I'm glad page time was spent on their story. Both are really good characters and deserve a HEA.

In Jennifer Ashley's Shifter's Unbound series, the Shifters have revealed themselves to humans. Out of fear of something they don't really understand, humans have put all Shifters into towns and put harsh laws into place that keep them from having good jobs, new cars, cable and more. Shifters tolerate this treatment because they have access to health care and the collars they are forced to wear has kept their wild animals from taking over. But you can feel changes are coming and I look forward to seeing what happens next. Primal Bonds is a really good paranormal romance with some fantasy woven in with by a few appearances from the Fae. I can't wait for the 3rd book.

After book 1 I was curious about Sean and th book was well written to shed any light or thoughts. I would like to see more about Andrea and there could be more in other books, but will see.

Don't miss this story of rebirth and hope!

A year ago, our country sat riveted to newscasts showing the destruction of a national treasure - Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans. You might ask what that has to do with a review of Kristi Gold's September release, DAMAGE CONTROL - HOTEL MARCHAND. Turns out, the answer is quiet a lot, actually.

Renee Marchand returned to the Big Easy a failure, having left Hollywood in disgrace after Pete Traynor walked out on the movie she staked her career on. Professionally shamed, Renee is also devastated on a personal level, since his disappearance followed a night of passion. She refocuses her life, determined to help save her family's hotel, a beloved landmark.

Trouble begins when Pete Traynor shows up in New Orleans, scouting a movie location. Will Renee be able to put aside her personal feelings for the good of her family? And why has Pete chosen to insinuate himself back in her life after abandoning her in the first place?

Even as the winds of Hurricane Katrina were actually blowing, Kristi was writing about the rebirth of a city dear to her heart. She wrote: ...they proceeded up the street past myriad shops, restaurants and the occasional bar, sure signs that the city had begun to completely recover from Katrina's devastation... Kristi's optimism and love for New Orleans makes me wonder if she had a crystal ball.

Kristi says this was the toughest book she'd ever written. Don't miss this novel of hope and rebirth for both a city and for the love between Pete and Renee.

badgering "hero"

I've been reading and enjoying this series which, until now, I'd rate 4*.but this book isn't doing it for me. I suppose the author is trying to create a strong male lead, but I am annoyed by Pete. He doesn't respect Renee. no matter how many times she says no - and means it - he pushes and badgers. he doesn't take her no's seriously. I don't like him at all. he also ruined Renee's career 3 years earlier and then waltzes in and expects her to forgive him just like that. she's better off w/o him, imo.

warm post Katrina romance

Movie producer Renee Marchand returns home to New Orleans to regroup following a major fiasco. She agrees to take over public relations for the family run Hotel Marchand though she insists this is temporary as she plans to return to Southern California to reenergize her career.

Film director Pete Traynor comes to New Orleans seeking locations for a film he is planning to make. He stays at the Hotel Marchand where he sees Renee; three years ago they shared a torrid one night stand, but though both wanted more but career commitments ended their relationship before it began. Now he wants to start where they left off while she feels the same, but fears this time her heart will not recover once he leaves her, which she assumes will be as soon as he completes his mission.

The latest Hotel Marchand post Katrina romance is a fine entry in a warm series as the lead couple is a nice pairing who belong together. However, that also leads to the conflict of when he will leave her behind as he returns to California. This conflict seems forced and adding to the hero and heroine's worry is neither of the stars wants to admit the truth. Still readers will enjoy Hollywood in New Orleans as the likable Pete and the nice Renee complete what they started three years ago with lust metamorphosing into love.

About the Author

Nancy Rogers is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University. With research interests including music cognition and its pedagogical implications, Dr. Rogers has presented papers at national and international conferences, including meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, and the Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology. She was a keynote speaker at the 2009 Musical Ear conference held at Indiana University. Several recent publications may be found in Music Theory Online, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and Em Pauta.

Professor Rogers received her Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music; she is a Mellon Fellow in the Humanities. She has served as President of Music Theory Southeast, Secretary of the Society for Music Theory, and Treasurer of Music Theory Midwest. Before coming to Florida State University, she served on the faculties of Northwestern University, the University of Iowa, and Lawrence University.

Unnecessarily expensive for the worth

This is simply overpriced-- I have paid less for full sized textbooks. I have no clue why this is $90.

I'm not sure what the point is of having a hundred different versions is either, most of the examples haven't changed from the last edition but instead have been switched around and the numbers have been changed. Good business strategy.

Seeing as basic music notation and sight singing have not been revolutionized as of late, I can't possibly think of any justification for having a new version every two years--other than to make a pile of money off of music students, of course.

Buy it used, if you can get it for ...

Buy it used, if you can get it for a cheaper price. This book will stay with you through several semesters of Ear Training and Sight Singing, so treat it well. It is worth it to have half of the solfege already written in, and most musicians who are diligent enough to write in solfege know to do it in pencil, so you can remove it if needed.
