This is how American poet Sandburg described the linguistic phenomenon of slang in the New York Times in 1959 (quoted in Crystal 2006: 117). His definition accurately expresses the spirit of slang, but somewhat exaggerates its virtue. Nevertheless, Sandburg's definition has become an often quoted phrase. His quotation already indicates the peculiarity of slang, which sparked my interest in analysing the relationship between such a complex linguistic manifestation and the compound human activity of translation. Therefore, this essay aims to explore the questions evolving around the translation of slang and gives examples by reference to the novel From Here to Eternity (1951) by US American writer James Jones (1921-1977). The novel was translated into several languages, inter alia into German by Otto Schrag (1951) and into Hungarian by Szíjgyártó László (1975). The novel's abundance in slang expressions means a great challenge for the translator and thus offers insightful material for the exploration of translation theory and practice. After a general introduction of the linguistic phenomenon of slang, including a theoretical analysis of its characteristics, functions and its linguistic features as well as a brief overview of slang in literature, chapter three shall introduce Jones's novel with the focus on its slang elements. Furthermore, the first part of chapter four is dedicated to explore the translatability of slang on the basis of Hervey and Higgins' theory of compromise and compensation by giving German and Hungarian translation examples of the novel. Moreover, subchapter 4.2 will examine the translation methods with regard to Jones's novel by focusing on the different traditions of American, German and Hungarian slang usage. Subchapter 4.

The Irish in America was created, in part, as a companion to the PBS documentary series of the same name that was first aired in January 1998. Journalist Terry Golway's text provides a solid backbone to the book: she tells the usual story of Irish involvement in American politics and also sheds light on contributions that the Irish have made to American industry and culture. Golway's text is interspersed (sometimes a bit confusingly) with hundreds of illustrations, as well as with many brief essays by Irish American notables, including historians, novelists, comedians, musicians, and politicians. Two of the most enlightening are historian Ellen Skerrett's essay on the Irish American penchant for building cathedrals and Maureen Murphy's look at how Irish immigrant girls found upward mobility in America. Other essays aren't as strictly historical, but the matching of writer and subject makes them irresistible. For example, a lively contribution by novelist Thomas Flanagan on Irish Americans as portrayed in John Ford's films raises serious issues while still being entertaining (much like Ford's films). Despite a few other inclusions that may make some readers scratch their heads or roll their eyes (such as Denis Leary's essay, which contains something guaranteed to offend almost everyone), The Irish in America is a worthy effort, one that offers valuable insight into American history and the distinct role played by the Irish.

Beautiful book, well done and full of facts.

As a person of Irish descent, I was very happy to see "The Irish in America". This book is full of colorful illustrations showing what the Irish have accomplished in this country. I am referencing the book in my MA, History Thesis, this Autumn.
On page 57, however, the editors have made an understandable error. They attribute the founding of Manhattan College (1853), De La Salle University (1863) and St. Mary's (Moraga, California, (1863) to the Irish Christian Brothers. As a 1965 graduate of Manhattan College, I can tell you that these three colleges were founded by the French Christian Brothers, also know as the De La Salle Brothers. This teaching order was founded in Paris by St. John Baptist de la Salle, and predates the Irish Christian Brothers by almost two hundred years. To my knowledge, the only college founded by the Irish Christian Brothers in the U.S. is Iona College (1940) in New York. Personally, I enjoyed the book, found new facts about the Irish in America, and would recommend it to any Irish or Irish-American person.

Famous Irish offer engrossing overview of culture in USA

Coffey and Golway give a wonderful overview of the experiences of Irish men and women in the United States. Coming to the U.S. as a result of political an religious oppression, as well as a result of the potato blight in the mid-19th century, the Irish worked hard to gain respectablity and political voices as American citizens. In many cases, especially in the early 20th Century, to be Irish was to be a second class citizen in the U.S. Today's attitudes prove that the Irish have come a long way in American society from being judged as such to becoming a very proud and celebrated nationality in our country.
Coffey and Golway use numerous anecdotes, excerpts, and other quotations from famous and not so famous Irish Americans. Included in this book are Denis Leary, Frank McCourt, and a forward by Patrick Kennedy. Reflections of these Irish-American personalities on their grandparents' or parents' lives and hard work, as well as memories of Catholic school, and other aspects of Irish-American life. Glossy photographs accent each passage beautifully and add to the overall attraction of the book. Contributions by all the authors provides a celebration of Irish ethnicity and heritage in the United States that is portrayed as humorous, melancholy, but overall proud. This book accents the PBS Documentary by the same name very nicely. After reading this book, I wished in a sense, that I had some Irish heritage.

About the Author
John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. He attended Harrow and trained as a barrister at New College, Oxford. Although called to the bar in 1890, rather than practise law, Galsworthy travelled extensively and began to write.

Start your spatial database exploration

This is another book from Manning publications in the excellent '.. in Action' series, which guides the reader through some practical uses of the book's subject. In this case the subject is PostGIS, which for people that come across the term for the first time, is a spatial database extender for the PostgreSQL database management system. As described in the introduction the audience of this book includes GIS Practitioners and Programmers, DB Practitioners as well as Scientists, Researchers, Educators and Engineers. That makes it obvious that the audience covers a wide spectrum of professionals that would have various degrees of experience with the subject matter.

The material is divided in three main parts, which are: Learning PostGIS, Putting PostGIS to work, and Using PostGIS with other tools as well as four additional appendices.

The first part about Learning PostGIS is an introduction to GIS database concepts and practices, that introduces the geometry, geography, raster and topology types and what problems can be solved by each one of them. There is a thorough explanation of what PostGIS is and what you can do with a spatially enabled database that is not possible with a relational database. There are also chapters describing the spatial types that PostGIS offers and their related functions, an introduction to spatial reference systems and their concepts, tools for loading spatial data as well as desktop tools for viewing and querying them, and the use of geometry, geography and raster functions, geocoding and finally an introduction to spatial relationships.

The second part Putting PostGIS to work, is where all the pieces are put together, using the theory foundation from the previous part, in order to solve real world problems to questions like: which places are within X distance and what are the N closest places?
These cover the traditional methods of finding closest neighbours as well as KNN indexes. Following that there is a section dedicated to geotagging. Geometry and geography processing has its own chapter to demonstrate techniques to manipulate geometries, and some of the most common problems and solutions related to them. Other chapters include raster processing, topology which includes creating a topology, and building and working with topogeometries as well as the simplification and validation of them. The final two chapters of this part offer the reader practical solutions in how to organise the spatial storage depending on the requirements, and some very useful tips about query performance tuning and optimisations. It should be also noted that throughout the book there are plenty of examples for the reader to follow, and especially in this part, that are of great practical use.

In the Using PostGIS with other tools part we are told how PostGIS can be extended by means of add-ons like the PostgreSQL procedural languages PL/R and PL/Python that allows us to use the wealth of statistical functions and plotting capabilities of R as well as the numerous Python packages. A variety of travelling-salesperson problems are displayed in this section, and the pgRouting used for building routing applications is also covered. The remaining chapters cover server-side mapping servers and client-side mapping frameworks to display PostGIS data on the web.

Finally the appendices have a very useful section with additional resources, instruction for installing PostGIS, an SQL primer and a separate section with the PostgreSQL features that includes table inheritance, roles, functions and performance tips.

To summarise, this is an extremely useful book for a variety of professional people interested in discovering PostGIS and at the same time PostgreSQL. It does not require any previous knowledge of geospatial databases as there is a great explanation and coverage of the theory, systems and tools needed. It would be helpful if the reader has some knowledge of SQL in order to follow the examples provided, even though there is very good appendix that covers SQL.
A highly recommended book for starting your exploration in the world of spatial databases.

Great for GIS Server Systems, but SpatiaLite import/export desire

I think this is the BEST, Concise reference to PostGIS GIS Systems, with the right amount of material covering the essence of ProstgreSQL Servers. However, it doesn't do diligence to SpatiaLite, the perfect companion-dataset for those needing a single-file-portability option, for those needing to import/export To and From with a single file.

[ SpatiaLite is a modern, lightning fast GIS database file using the Open Geospatial Consortium's "Simple Feature Access" standard and the lightning fast SQLite database file format, and can easily used with open GIS systems, yet it is FAR superior to GIS formats like GeoJSON, KML and other basic shape formats (numerous "ShapeFiles" can be migrated into a single spatiaLite.sqlite file, much like an access.mdb file, except that It's MUCH quicker and with the added bonus of SQL power ]

Together, a GIS system featuring a server side database, [PostGIS] and a single-file-portable database [Spatialite] really empower and complement once another, and so I'm expecting the best book available on PostGIS to cover it's companion a bit. (Every GIS System should have operators experienced with both)

But since this book deals with "PostGIS" I perhaps shouldn't expect more than it delivers. Still, it would have been nice to include insight into how powerful that duo work together, and it would have been nice to have more details about exporting/importing Spatialite.sqlite files to and from a PostGIS System with ease. Many GIS users would have appreciated it.

Still, this is such a valuable resource that it demands a 5 star rating.

The only book you'll need to learn PostGIS

While the official PostGIS documentation is already really good, this book will give you torough overview of the functionality provided by PostGIS. It has a lot of code snippets, examples, comparisons between older and newer versions of PostGIS, comparisons with other spatial databases and is very well written. The nicest thing about this book is that you can benefit from the experience of the authors because the book is full advice like: "Although it might appear that ST_Disjoint would be used frequently, this isn’t the case. The problem with ST_Disjoint is that it can’t use an index."

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving his PostGIS skills, whether he is a beginner or not. For beginners it contains introductory chapters on GIS concepts like projection systems and more experienced people will still learn a lot in the later chapters like for example the nuances of the different intersection functions (clip, overlap, crosses,...), the "new" raster functions and many more.

It doesn't take Lancaster long to live up to her lengthy subtitle ("Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart-Ass, or Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office"): in just one chapter, she gloats over cheating a homeless man, is rude to a waitress and passes judgment on all of her co-workers (including her "whore" best friend). She's almost gleeful about lacking "the internal firewall that keeps us from saying almost everything we think," but she doesn't come off as straightforward, just malicious. (Of course, it's possible she's making up much of her dialogue, which is a little too clever to be believable.) Lancaster expects sympathy for her downward slide after getting fired from her high-paying finance job in the post-9/11 recession, and chick lit fans may be entertained watching life imitate fiction, but just when you start to feel sorry for her, the snotty attitude returns. In later chapters, Lancaster increasingly relies on entries from her blog (www.jennsylvania. com) and caustic replies to criticisms, and though things start looking up—her husband finds a job, she lands a book deal—it's not clear that she's been as chastised by her experiences as she claims. Hilarious

Jen Lancaster is hilarious. She says EXACTLY what goes through her mind, which I greatly admire. It's not an easy trait to find. Jen's writing never fails to cheer me up or make me laugh. She's one of a kind! "Bitter" is a great place to start to get to know this wonderful girl.

Hilarious, Witty and Tons of Fun!

My best friend, Sonja, (bless her generous heart) gave me this book after she read it and highly recommended it. I have to say it was even funnier than she said it was.

Jen (NOT JENNY) is one of the most loveable, egocentric, witty characters I have ever read about. The fact that it's a memoir is even better! She cusses a blue streak and comes up with awesome one-liners. When she called herself, "Carbohydate Barbie" I cracked up and could totally relate. Jen loses her high paying corporate job and must (gasp) even sell her Kate Spade shoes on Ebay before all is said and done. Her man, Fletch, is a baby doll and true blue friend. The account of their wedding in Las Vegas (where, unfortunately a porn convention was being held at the same time) was my favorite part.

If you're tired of the same old chick lit [...], get this refreshing book. Jen is an inspiring, creative survivor. I look forward to more books from her.

This book is neither clearly written nor easy to read. It is written for a reader who already has a background in the subject. I would not recommend this book to somebody who wanted to casually learn more about international relations, and even I, as a beginning student of international relations (it's my major, for crying out loud) am not finding it to be particularly useful. There is a little information bogged down in a lot of words.

One would think that trying to get by on $10,000 a year is impossible. Well, George in a very humorous way gives us the road map never traveled. Why, because we have so much crap rammed down our throats by CorpAmerica that it takes everything we make plus credit cards and whatever we can talk out Mom and Dad just to get by. What if it was possible to have the best that life has to offer and it only cost $10,000? Well, George Ure of urbansurvival.com has done the impossible. Thanks George for one more book on how to live the good life.

There are better extreme frugality books out there.

The author has a disjointed style of writing which is irritating. When you move beyond this the content is alarmist and highly padded. Really you could condense half the book by advising the reader to live without a car and house share. I would not recommend this book sorry. You have potential George but you missed the mark with this one.

This text is okay, but as the authors state, many of the tactics are not ones they have used but rather have been those that others have used. It is not really a practical guide but thought provoking never the less.
