About the Author
Robert Knapp earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Princeton University in 1972. He has published work on differential geometry and partial differential equations, and, after a year at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, taught graduate and undergraduate mathematics at Purdue University. His study and appreciation of abstract mathematics began in high school and his conviction that mathematics, including abstract mathematics, is about the world began then, as well. Although he retired from the profession in the late 1970s, his study of the content, history and application of mathematics continues to this day. In recent years he has presented his unique perspectives on geometry and the number system in a series of lectures at Objectivist Summer Conferences organized by the Ayn Rand Institute. He has lived in the Philadelphia area for almost 30 years.

Brilliant Breakthrough in Mathematical Theory

Just as Ayn Rand corrected, completed, and extended the Aristotelian project into a new, brilliant, organic - and true - philosophic whole; so too retired professor of mathematics, Robert Knapp - applying Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge - has corrected, completed, and extended the Euclidian postulates into a new, brilliant, organic - and true - mathematic whole.

Dr. Knapp has synthesized his decades of research in modern academic mathematical theory together with Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge into a stunning work in which he has created the framework for a new philosophy of mathematics.

Chapter I, "Euclid's Method" lays the groundwork for a reinterpretation of Euclid's method that is solidly grounded in reality. After more than 2,000 years, Euclid's mathematical treatise has finally received the proper objective foundation necessary for modern mathematical theory to be set aright. This single chapter deepened my understanding of both the foundations of geometry and AR's theory of concepts.

While I do teach math to children, I found that having a mathematical background was not necessary to follow Dr. Knapp's arguments. Moreover, no prior knowledge of Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge was required either. Dr. Knapp's writing is crystal clear as he shuttles back and forth between abstract points and concrete examples. I found the book's illustrations extremely helpful in grasping the material.

My favorite chapter was "Geometry and Human Cognition" for its insightful application of AR's idea of "measurement omission" to mathematical diagrams and the resulting cognitive rewards. Surprisingly, I found my mind wandering to AR's theory of stylization and art while considering Dr. Knapp's views. There is much here for the serious thinker.

If you are interested in the philosophy of science in general, or the philosophy of mathematics specifically - this is the book that all future mathematical theorists will have to take into account. As for students of AR's philosophy, here we have an application of her view of knowledge to heretofore unexplored territory - a territory rich with untapped wealth.

Dr. Knapp's book can but only be the necessary beginning of a philosophy of mathematics for the 21st century - and a brilliant beginning it is.

a very readable, philosophical, objective defense of Euclid

As a homeschooling mom I was delighted to see this defense of Euclid's geometry. The author explains what angles, line segments, and circles are actually measuring, how Euclid relates one to another to bootstrap his way into measuring one thing by means of another, and how these abstractions symbolize real objects. It is both a philosophical defense of the useful, reality-based, practical worth of mathematics and an explanation of the math itself. I'm neither a math geek nor a philosopher, so a lot of it is over my head, but the author's explanations are very clear and thorough and non-technical (as far as is possible). The subject is becoming slowly more clear to me. So, I'm enjoying the book and highly recommend it even to other laymen.

The value of being worldly

I'm excited by this book. While I'm not through it entirely, it warrants a review already.

Prof. Knapp's integration, in the early sections of the book, of Euclid's great "Elements" and Ayn Rand's "Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology" is a pleasure to see and read. His discussion of the concepts of perfection and imperfection in shapes, and in relation to perception is eye-opening (in an intellection sense). And explaining the concept "precision", in the service of one's purpose for using geometry and measurement, adds great clarity to how one should think about mathematics and its relation to the world.

His whole project here, to extend Ayn Rand's epistemological approach to measurement and mathematics (as opposed to Aristotle's metaphysical approach, or Plato's approach, or the modern symbolist approach) into a new philosophy of mathematics is done with great clarity (I have to use that word again because clarity stands out compared to many other books on math theory that I've seen.)

Overall this book is a great tonic and antidote to the absurd Hilbert/Russellian flights of fancy in mathematics or the deeply embedded Platonic mathematical "universe" that so many mathematicians have mistakenly embedded in their way of thinking.

I'm NOT Related to the Author and I Really Liked the Story!

In response to one reviewer's comment, Jenika, I don't know the author and I'm not related to her but I really like the book and think that the Series has a lot of potential. I find it irritating and insulting that some readers who don't like a book question the integrity and validity of the reviews of the readers who do like the book. They make no room for the fact that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and taste is as varied as individuals. Jenika, yours is not the only opinion that honest.

Yes, the writing in the first chapter or two is a bit choppy, but the story was interesting enough that I pressed passed it and was rewarded. The plot is original and I really like the main characters especially Brock who too alpha male sexy for words. Yum! I love paranormal cozy mysteries with romance and this Series has the potential to be a really, really good one. I recommend that the author get a editor to help with her writing shortcomings as well as assisting her with catching editing errors like missing words and repetitive phrases as was present here. I took off one star for the latter. However, overall I rated the book on how much I enjoyed it despite it's obvious shortcoming, the originality of the plot, the characters, the character development, the Serie's potential, the wise pricing, and the slow progression and genuine chemistry between Brock and Jasmine. I found the book quite entertaining and I can hardly wait for the 2nd book due out next month. At .99, if you like paranormal cozy mysteries, I say buy it, read it and Enjoy. Just realize that it does have some shortcomings.

Your werewolf/witch/biker/ghost stories fun, you'll love this one. I personally love the thought of hot werewolves, and the one Ms. Ashe has, hum conjured up is indeed hot. Sir Edward is a riot, drinking vodka at the worst possible time, running his mouth when he should be sleeping off his drunk. Loved this book! Cannot wait for the sequel!

Having already been familiar with this author from her Izzy Cooper series, I didn't hesitate starting this new one. I really enjoyed everything about this book. Instead of giving tedious dialog about the main character's history all at once, it was scattered in bits & pieces throughout the book. Just like how it would happen when someone new comes into your own life. Jazz learned about her history at the same time the reader does. This, in my opinion, gives the reader a better connection to Jazz and the development of the relationships with the other characters. A smart mouthed talking monkey, enjoyable characters & an interesting storyline that sets up the background for future books. Great start to a new series!

One of the Best of 2011

This is Larkin Rose's fifth novel. In this book, she introduces the reader to fashion designer Eve Harris, a driven workaholic at the top of the fashion ladder with no time for dating and romance. She gets physical relief using a British phone sex operator named Lexi.

Also introduced is Jodi Connelly, a very successful paid escort who was once a phone sex operator but has pared her phone sex client list down to a special three, one of whom is Eve.

Both women are obsessed with the other without ever having met in person and neither has any interest in meeting in person because they are certain they will be disappointed with reality. The chances of meeting are slim to none because Eve lives in New York City and Jody lives in London. Little do they know that they would, indeed, meet. Neither could possibly foretell the cataclysmic effects their meeting will have on their carefully controlled lives.

Rose has written a book that no reader will be able to easily put down. This is a tightly woven story so well written that there's not single misstep. From start to finish, the story moves quickly forward. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could very well have become trite. Larkin's sure hand makes this a compelling story of two women looking for the same thing.

There is one caveat, though. The intimate meetings between Eve and Jody are explicit. If you prefer the details of sexual meetings to be hinted at rather then drawn in vivid detail, this is not the book for you.

Ridiculous... but fun

So this is the kind of book you don’t want to get caught reading.

Random stranger on BART: “Oh, that book looks fun, what’s it about?”

Me: “Um… it’s a romance... about a woman in love with a phone sex operator.”

No. Seriously… No. I’m not explaining that to anybody. It’s like a Ho-Ho. Those damn things are delicious. But you don’t want anyone to see you eat it.

So this book was fun. I think it’s the fluffiest book I’ve ever read, but it’s still fun. Nothing more.

Eve Harris is a fashion designer. She is at the top of her game and leads a successful life. She even has her own phone sex operator named Lexi for whenever she feels the need for sex. Lexi knows Eve's every last sexual need. Eve has no need to clutter up her life with a real live relationship. Jodi Connelly is a ladies escort, she also has a couple of phone sex clients left over from her previous job. Eve is the one she feels she has a connection with though. When Eve comes to London for fashion week, Jodi and Eve meet. Eve has no idea that Jodi is also Lexi, but Jodi knows who Eve is and the two women begin a week of hot sex with each other. What will happen when Eve finds out that her hot stud and Lexi are one and the same person?
A thoroughly enjoyable hot and steamy afternoon's read. If you want a story and you want it hot and sexy, look no further, this is the one.

It's a lifelong practice that can, and should, seep into every arena of the quotidian, so that when we're attentively folding laundry or taking out the trash, we're doing meditation. It involves teaching the mind just to be here, says Hagen. Three dozen microchapters are organized into sections on getting started, establishing a daily practice and doing meditation for the long run. While there are a few black-and-white illustrations to get readers to try seated meditation in different postures, Hagen emphasizes that it's also okay to sit in a chair (without slouching), stand, walk barefoot or even lie down. The key is to be constant, meditating at precisely the same time every day and allowing the mind to settle into the present. Meditation isn't something we apply to our life, Hagen insists. "Meditation Now or Never" strips down the misconceptions of meditation and gets down to the "nuts and bolts" of the practice. A wonderful book that stesses what meditation is and not what it does. A must for anyone who wants to understand the here and now.

An essential boat maintenance manual

The second edition of This Old Boat is a more professional production than the first edition. Not that the first edition was bad, on the contrary, it was a good resource, but it had a somewhat hand-made feel about it. The diagrams were freehand sketches and a lot of the information lacked depth. Although it was always a good place to start, it was usually necessary to turn to other reference works (such as Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" or Spurr's "Guide to Upgrading Your Cruising Sailboat") for precise information about how to carry out a certain repair or improvement. However, what it lacked in depth of information it more than made up for with its clear explanations of the "big picture" and Casey's ability to impart a sense of motivation.

This new edition improves on the first by being a good deal larger than the first edition, having information that is more in-depth, and illustrations that are much improved. It is now closer in "feel" to Calder's Boatowner's Manual. It also covers a lot of the information contained in Casey's several short sailboat maintenance handbooks, and to an extent it updates and replaces them. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is the only book by Casey that you now need to own in order to have all of the information he has previously published, but it is close.

Issues with the printing.

The information in this book is great. Lots of excellent detail and any boat owner will find reams of important useful information in it. Five stars for the author. BUT - the printing is hard to read in this edition. Not only very small, but printed in a gray ink on semi translucent paper. What were they thinking? I find it very difficult to read comfortably. Perhaps those with younger eyes will not mind.

Comprehensive boat owners repair manual

Wish I had this updated edition before starting my refit--this would have replaced many other individual texts and lots of trial and error work. Simple building-block projects in each section demystify boat construction and accurately impress the simplicity of seemingly complex improvements.

You, yes even you, can actually do many of the things listed in this book if you have the requisite patience. Would definately buy again, great reference even if you elect not to do repairs and improvements yourself so you can understand what your yard is charging for...

learning how to conduct

Book is very informative about what the person has to learn inorder to conduct a piece of music. It also shows how to stand with the body, how to conduct different time signatures and has pieces to practice with. This book is very good and I would recommend it for a student in school or as a review.
