Review
"Hornblower was never in better form. . . . Forester to a superlative degree has the ability to convey the spray, the color, the wind, and the men molded by the sea".

In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson. Soon Atropos is part of the Mediterranean Fleet's harassment of Napoleon, recovering treasure that lies deep in Turkish waters and boldly challenging a Spanish frigate several times her size. At the center of each adventure is Hornblower, Forester's most inspired creation, whose blend of cautious preparation and spirited execution dazzles friend and foe alike.

I like the Hornblower Novels
By Robert Holcomb
I like the Hornblower Novels, and have repeatedly read them since high school. What can I say?
Forester was a sailor, and it is reflected in his writing. He also must have done a lot of research. The details of how to work a full rigged ship are interesting. Forester also wrote a non-fiction book, The Age of Fighting Sail, which is very good. I read Mahan after that one.
The book begins with Hornblower's being put in change of the water portions of Admiral Nelson's funeral. Interesting in the details that have to be covered, including personnel, and the crises in countered in the course of a few days on land. Also gives and insight into the culture of the Court of St. James at the time.
The Atropos is a sloop of war. When it arrives at the Channel Fleet, it is used as a scout to keep watch on the French Fleet being blockaded. Lots of action on land and sea.

In my opinion this is the last of the "good" Hornblower books
By Amazon Customer
Mr Midshipman - Lieutenant H and this book are best of the series to me. Afterward the efforts of Hornblower to do his duty to God country and himself are intermixed with his personal flaws. God spare me the drama. Nobody on earth gives a rat's petutty for my feelings or my flaws. Only if I've done what I ought to or not.
In this story Hornblower is ordered to recover a sunken English army payroll from a hostile bay. His ship is small & vulnerable. His crew is obnoxious. His enemies are devious. And his orders require him not to comit acts of war. And here in the last of the great Hornblower novels - he does his duty.
Hereafter Hornblower will continue to do his duty. But we must be annoyed with his own "feelings". I submit that nobody's feelings compare to doing what one ought to do. Up to here Hornblower does what he ought to do. Hereafter he occasionally takes account of his feelings. And I like him less hereafter.

This is the fifth book in the Hornblower Saga following Hornblower during the Crisis.
By the gunner
Hornblower and the Atropus
This is the fifth book in the Hornblower Saga following Hornblower During the Crisis (Hornblower Saga) Hornblower is assigned to the twenty-two gun Atropus, a sloop of war, the smallest ship that warrants a full captain. He is assigned to go to a quiet bay in Turkey where a British ship loaded with both gold and silver has sunk in about 100 feet of water. His mission is to recover the treasure and not to alert the Turks with what is going on. He is to pick up some Ceylonese divers and their handler en route.
Naturally Hornblower demonstrates his superior nautical abilities and his deering do.
I highly recommend this book and this entire series to fans of naval adventures.
