About the Author
Mischa Schwartz joined the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in 1974 and is now Charles Batchelor Professor Emeritus. He is the author and co-author of nine books, including best-selling books on communication systems and computer networks. His current research focuses on wireless networks. He is a Fellow and former Director of the IEEE, past President of the IEEE Communications Society, and past Chairman of the IEEE Group on Information Theory. He was the 1983 recipient of the IEEE Education Medal and was listed among the top ten all-time EE educators, IEEE survey, 1984. He also received the 2003 Japanese Okawa Prize for contributions to Telecommunications and Engineering Education and the New York City Mayor's Award in 1994 for contributions to computer communications.

many problems for the student

This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.

But for the mobile wireless field, most standards and implementations are still so new. There has been little time for some author to come up with a suitable and indepth suite of problems, until this text. The comprehensive nature of these may be very attractive to a lecturer. Plus, the author also offers an adjunct solutions book.

Kemp regards him as not only a major reformer, educator and ecologist, but also as a great realistic draftsman whose drawings reveal developing emotional instability. Increasingly, Ruskin's attention moved from art to society as he came to criticize capitalism, religion, technology, the destruction of nature--and himself. First sightseer, then see-er, finally seer and mythmaker, Ruskin in his old age became industry as well as institution: there were Ruskin ceramics and linens, even Ruskin cigars. This distinguished work, gracefully translated, is illustrated with portraits of the critic and drawings by him.

Artist, writer, and world traveler, Ruskin moved vigorously through Victorian times with a unique view of the way things were and a strong conviction regarding the way they should be. His ideas, whether aesthetic, moral, or political, influenced lay audiences as well as his artistic and intellectual peers. The portraits that open each chapter of this book provide a literal as well as literary depiction of this man, too often seen as either saint or madman. But though the renewed interest in Ruskin may allow for a more balanced view of the man and his ideas, this somewhat awkward translation of a 1983 introduction for German audiences is too superficial to provide such a portrait.

An Engaging Biography of Ruskin and Account of the Victorian Era

I got this book because I wanted an introduction to John Ruskin, who was a famous art critic and social critic in Victorian Britain, and this biography does an excellent job of narrating the major events of Ruskin's life, explaining Ruskin's major ideas, and describing the world that Ruskin lived in. Interestingly enough, this book was originally written in German and then translated into English, which explains why the author sometimes compares Ruskin's ideas to contemporaries living in Germany, but it works.

Great symbol identification and clue following

This is a very unique Carle book. Your child can learn more about shapes and how to follow clues to lead to the next step. My daughter enjoyed reading the story and following the "clues" to the next shape to find the present at the end - a puppy.

If you take the story literally as an adult, you will agree with one of the reviewers that was upset a puppy was being stored in a cave/basement. But it's not meant to be taken literally. It's a fantastical journey for children. To this day, my daughter enjoys following the trail to the present waiting for her at the end.

As a previous K teacher, both my students and I have always loved this book. Eric Carle is a master, not only with his vivid, eye-catching illustrations, but also in knowing exactly what would appeal to a child. Having a birthday, waking up to a secret message, being led through all the clues including small cut-outs in the pages, to discover the surprise gift - totally enchanting for a child. Finding the puppy at the end, especially for dog-lovers, has got to be the ultimate gift. After retiring, this is one book I could not give away. Highly recommended.

Could have been better

This story could have been great or even a little better if the author had put a bit more personality behind the characters. Also she gives you a brief history of the two womens past in the beginning of the book. Then when the flashback happens it is sudden and takes over half the book. I would have liked some more meat to the two of them getting together and what they did to get where they are now. To me the characters seemed one demensional. The only one I really liked was Cyndi, Danis friend.

Quite Enjoyable!

This book, I believe the writer's debut, is quite enjoyable. The romance is heartfelt, the women very likable and really a very good light read.
Given that McCann seems to have a real sense of good plotting and the right touch for true romance writing, I am really hoping that her next novel shows some improvements, especially in characterization technique.
Characterization doesn't lack -- that's not the problem. I wonder if McCann has screenwriting experience, or perhaps it's just inexperience. When a new character arrives on the page, McCann gives us the entire history of the character, the whole deal, as musings by the character whose point-of-view we're experiencing. After the presentation of the character dialogue ensues and there is no further characterization given. That leads to secondary characters we understand, because we're given their bio when they show up, but who don't grow or change or surprise or delight us as their character emerges over the course of a scene.
If Jeanne McCann can smooth out her characterization technique then I think she'll be a real treat to read in the future. Maybe I sound negative, but the book was good enough that I didn't just stop with "4 stars, enjoyable read." I liked it so much I wanted her next book to be better.

Wonderful story - a delightful read with loads of drama to satisfy any romance reader

This is terrific story that is a complete page turner. The plot was very believable. The story starts present day with the main character flashing back to her college years 20 years earlier and a romance that suddenly and inexplicably ended. The main characters are truly nice people and I was really pulling for them to overcome the past.

I couldn't put the book down until the end. The pace of the story was excellent and kept me completely engaged. I liked how the flashback occurred in the middle third of the book rather than weaving in and out through the story, it was very smooth and easy to follow. By the end of the flashback the characters were real people to me and wonderfully fleshed out.

If you are in the mood to read a wonderful romance about two really great people with quite a bit of heartbreak this is the book for you. My only wish is that the story was 100 pages longer as these characters were so great to read about.

The only part of the book I read was Immensee, but it was enough - what a beautiful story. Nothing that followed could possibly have compared. The characters are crafted so wonderfully that it's impossible to not feel like you know them. Reinhard is particularly captivating, with his kindness, his wandering soul, and his enduring love for a girl he never manages to get. Watching him slowly be replaced in Elisabeth's life is painful - as painful as it is to observe his youth and vigor slowly slipping away. Geez - I read this stupid thing today, and even now it haunts me.

A classical German love story by a master of the novella form, the 'long short story'.
All good love stories are sad. This is one of the best and saddest.
Written in 1850 by a man who was appropriately called Storm, it was his breakthrough to literary fame and fortune.
My biggest surprise at this reading encounter is, that I realize: I never read it before. That's stupid. It's like not knowing a Beethoven string quartet.
The story in a nutshell: an old man remembers his childhood infatuation with a girl, and from there we move in stages to the end of their contact: she has married another man, because her mother wanted it that way. The story may be mid 19th century, but it is as contemporary as they come.
Storm was a poet and a writer of novellas. He didn't belong to 'romantic' literature, but is classified as 'poetical realist'.

The introductory theoretical chapters were really well written and helpful. I was a little disappointed that the treatment approach chapters largely focused on Borderline Personality Disorder and didn't cover all of the personality disorders. As I was looking for help with DPD and OCPD, this book wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped for.

Jose Silva has uncovered the almost magical potential of our minds, decades ago. Yet truth never gets old. The incredible influence that we have when it comes to other people is exemplified in this book. We can make reaching our goals child's play when we use our God given gift of reaching the Alpha and Theta states of mind. That is how intuition can be explained, among other things. Visualizing while in Alpha the goals that we want to achieve, first, will make those goals easier to manifest in "the real world". Anything by any Silva instructor (such as Robert B. Stone, Burt Goldman, etc.) not to mention Jose Silva himself, is an eye opener into this ability that we all possess.

I have Silva's original blue book the Silva Mind Control Method and the original cd's on his first course and I feel the materials that I have stated here are all you need to establish yourself as a good Silva Mind Practitioner. Subjective Communication is mentioned in the CD's and how to develop it. This book was more of a medium to push other products and seminars--very short and hardly any instruction. Any instruction mentioned was already covered in the cd's like I already stated.

About the Author
Dr Alserhan is the founder of the discipline of Islamic Marketing. He is the founding editor of the International Journal of Islamic Marketing and Branding (Inderscience), the founder and first editor of the Journal of Islamic Marketing (Emerald), the founder and editor of two Arabic journals on the subject. He is founder and Chair of the Global Islamic Marketing Conference, now in its seventh cycle, and he is the CEO of the International Islamic Marketing Association. He is also an associate Professor of Marketing at Qatar University. He previously worked at the United Arab Emirates University, Abu Dhabi University, and as a Credit Specialist for Microsoft European Operation Center, Ireland.
