A good book on Polymer Chemistry
By Matthew D. Herrmann
I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter.

Not a good polymer chemistry book...
By Jess C.
This book is indeed full of errors. The kinetic sections were too unorganized and full of errors. The kinetics were frustrating enough without the formulas being wrong in the first place. Also, the book will derive multiple ways of solving for the same thing and bury what you really need to understand the concepts. The synthesis, nomenclature and production sections were okay at best. I will say this though, by having such a bad book I really learned a lot trying to sift out the information that was needed.

Polymer Class Textbook
By Jaccqueline R. Brown
This book is an ok read, I actually bought it for one of my POlymer Chemistry Classes. It's not as dry as some textbooks i've read, but it is a bit confusing at times. The problems at the end of the chapters definitely help to see if you understand the concepts.

Review
"Dan Gillmor has thought more deeply, more usefully, and over a longer period of time about the next stages of media evolution than just about anyone else."
--James Fallows, author of Postcards from Tomorrow Square

A trustworthy press is required for the survival of a democracy, and we really need this book right now." --Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist

From the Inside Flap
"Dan Gillmor has thought more deeply, more usefully, and over a longer period of time about the next stages of media evolution than just about anyone else. In Mediactive, he puts the results of his ideas and experiments together in a guide full of practical tips and longer-term inspirations for everyone affected by rapid changes in the news ecology. This book is a very worthy successor to his influential We the Media."
--James Fallows, Atlantic Magazine, author of Postcards from Tomorrow Square and Breaking the News

"Dan's book helps us understand when the news we read is reliable and trustworthy, and how to determine when what we're reading is intended to deceive. A trustworthy press is required for the survival of a democracy, and we really need this book right now."
--Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist

"A master-class in media-literacy for the 21st century, operating on all scales from the tiniest details of navigating wiki software all the way up to sensible and smart suggestions for reforming law and policy to make the news better and fairer. Gillmor's a reporter's reporter for the information age, Mediactive made me want to stand up and salute."
--Cory Doctorow, co-editor/owner, Boing Boing; author of For the Win

"As the lines between professional and citizen journalists continue to blur, Mediactive provides a useful roadmap to help us become savvier consumers and creators alike."
-- Steve Case, chairman and CEO of Revolution and co-founder of America Online

"It's all true - at least to someone. And that's the problem in a hypermediated world where everyone and anyone can represent his own reality. Gillmor attacks the problem of representation and reality head on, demanding we become media-active users of our emerging media, instead of passive consumers. If this book doesn't get you out of Facebook and back on the real Internet, nothing will."
--Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age

"An important book showing people how to swim rather than drown in today's torrent of information. Dan Gillmor lives on the front line of digital information - there's no-one better to help us understand the risks and opportunities or help us ask the right questions."
--Richard Sambrook, Global Vice Chairman and Chief Content Officer at Edelman, and former BBC Director of Global News

"With the future of journalism and democracy in peril, Mediactive comes along with sage and practical advice at a crucial time. Dan Gillmor, pioneering journalist and teacher of journalists, offers a practical guide to citizens who now need to become active producers as well as critical consumers of media. Read this book right away, buy one for a friend and another one for a student, and then put Gillmor's advice into action."
--Howard Rheingold, author of the Smart Mobs and other books about our digital future

"Through common-sense guidelines and well-chosen examples, Gillmor shows how anyone can navigate the half-truths, exaggerations and outright falsehoods that permeate today's media environment and ferret out what is true and important. As Gillmor writes, 'When we have unlimited sources of information, and when so much of what comes at us is questionable, our lives get more challenging. They also get more interesting.'"
--Dan Kennedy, assistant professor of journalism at Northeastern University, former Boston Phoenix media critic, and author of the Media Nation blog at dankennedy.net

Terrific Book for Journalists, Citizen Activists, Others
By Barry Eisler
If you shape your political opinions based on what's reported in the news, you owe it to yourself to know more about how the news is reported. Mediactive is not only a great guide to the way journalism is conducted by the establishment media, but also a great guide to the way journalism *should be* conducted (see especially Chapter 8, "If I Ran a News Organization, Part 2"). It will help interested journalists do their jobs with greater integrity, and will better enable an engaged citizenry to recognize the difference between journalism, on the one hand, and stenography, propaganda, and other forms of deceit, on the other. An excellent read for bloggers, citizen journalists, professional journalists, and all consumers of the news, and I highly recommend it.

Tips for consuming--and producing--media
By Len Feldman
In 2004, Dan Gillmor wrote "We the Media", one of the first books to illuminate the role of "citizen journalists". "Mediactive" should be seen as a follow-on to "We the Media", not an update or sequel. It's split into three major sections: Media literacy, Media creation, and, for lack of a better term, "Other". The first section is essential reading for anyone, but it would be particularly valuable for high school and college students who are still learning how to judge whether a story is valid or an information source is reliable. The second section starts with a high-level overview of citizen journalism and dives into the nuts & bolts of blogging, Twitter and other means of self-publishing. This section is written primarily for novice citizen journalists; if you've been doing it for a while, you already know most of what Gillmor says.

The third section is, in my opinion, the least useful part of the book. It starts with a review of the laws and norms governing journalism and communications in the U.S., but it's at best an overview of the issues that any journalist should be aware of. Then, it jumps into a discussion of teaching and learning media literacy and journalism, and concludes with what needs to change in order to improve the practice of journalism. As Gillmor himself admits, the latter topic alone deserves its own book, and that's the problem with the final section of "Mediactive". Each of the last three chapters would work much better as separate books, and there are books that you can buy on the three subject areas that are much more comprehensive than the information that Gillmor gives in a single chapter.

In short, I strongly recommend "Mediactive" if you or someone you know is serious about developing media literacy skills, and moderately recommend it if you're interested in citizen journalism. If the topics in the last three chapters are of serious interest, you'd do better by buying books dedicated to the topics.

Essential insights from a leading news guru
By Andrew Heyward
Dan Gillmor, whom I've been lucky enough to meet a few times, is one of the leading thinkers about the revolution in journalism and its implications. In "Mediactive," he has created an indispensable user's manual and rallying cry for news consumers and would-be "citizen journalists" in the digital age. While most analysts focus only on eroding and emerging publishing and business models - and Gillmor has compelling insights to offer there as well - "Mediactive" speaks directly to all of us. It is a lively, fast-paced, and readable mix of inspiration and practical advice on how to be a smarter consumer of news - how to know what to believe in an age of anything-goes "journalism" - and, ultimately, how to become a productive participant in a global "conversation" enabled by digital technology. Whether you want to dive into citizen journalism or just keep your head above water in the flood of news and what passes for it, I warmly recommend "Mediactive" for anyone who cares about the future of journalism and its role in a vibrant democracy.

The Sea House: A Novel, by Esther Freud

The architect Klaus Lehmann loves his wife, Elsa, with a passion that continues throughout their married life despite long periods of separation. Almost half a century after Lehmann's death in the village of Steerborough, a young woman, Lily, arrives to research his life and work. Pouring over Klaus's letters to Elsa, Lily pieces together the story of their lives together and apart. And alone in her rented cottage by the sea, she begins to sense an absence in her own life that may not be filled by simply going home.

The Sea House is the story of the village of Steerborough and the marshes and the sea beyond. It is the story of one generation living in the footprints of another; of a landscape shaped by lives, and lives shaped by landscape. With characteristic skill and a new depth and range, Esther Freud explores the twisting paths that people take -- and the places where those paths meet.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

From Publishers Weekly
Painter Lucian's daughter, Sigmund's great-granddaughter and an accomplished novelist herself (Hideous Kinky), Freud invokes her father's family history in this splendidly written, evocative novel. Inspired by the letters of her grandfather, the architect Ernst Freud, she weaves an elegantly paced, double-stranded narrative set in the English coastal village of Steerborough. In the present, 20-something grad student Lily retreats to Steerborough for the summer with a bundle of letters that architect Klaus Lehman wrote to his wife, Elsa. Her story alternates with that of a group of German-Jewish emigres, including Klaus, Elsa and the deaf painter Max Meyer, who summer in Steerborough in 1953. While Lily pores over Klaus's adoring but paternalistic, bullying letters, she and her workaholic architect boyfriend Nick, living in London, are nearly incommunicado. "The men she knew didn't seem to feel the need to so utterly possess their women," Lily muses, somewhat regretfully. Between infrequent, strained visits from Nick, Lily makes a pretense at work, suns, swims and befriends the little girls next door—and their virile, working-class father. Freud depicts postwar Steerborough from the point of view of Max and his hostess, Gertrude Jilks, an English child psychoanalyst and friend of his recently deceased sister, Kaethe. As Max hungers for the beautiful Elsa while mourning Kaethe and the immeasurable loss of his life and family in Germany—a subtext Freud renders all the more powerful with slow, subtle revelations—he paints every house in the village, creating a scroll that Lily will one day discover on exhibition. The novel's setting is smalltown, but its thematic scope is generous: from Old World jealous love to modern-day commitment issues, art, psychoanalysis, dislocation and yearning for home. Though the culmination of the love stories feels too deliberately plotted, Freud has constructed her novel with beautiful precision.

From The New Yorker
In Freud's fifth novel, a young woman arrives in a small English seacoast village to research a thesis about a German architect who lived and worked there. While poring over his passionate letters to his wife (letters that raise questions about her own relationship with a man back in London), she becomes involved with the fractious family next door. Interspersed through this narrative is one concerning events decades earlier, when an artist visiting from London starts to make paintings of every house in the village and falls for the architect's wife. A dreamlike atmosphere pervades, rather at the expense of vivid characterization, but Freud's gift for natural description is such that she manages to turn the village's seaside topography into a sentient being, with its own stores of memory and malice.

From Booklist
Freud's fourth novel addresses the power of the artistic muse, but above all it is steeped in the landscape of Steerborough, a tiny British seaside village that is home to two complex casts of characters who live there 50 years apart. Klaus Lehmann, a Jewish architect and German emigre, writes letters to his wife from 1931 until his death in 1953. The letters end up in the hands of a present-day architecture student writing her thesis on Lehmann who rents a cottage in Steerborough to better soak up the creative atmosphere surrounding her famous subject. The time periods are soon revealed to have more than just letters in common, as Freud adroitly ties them together with matching threads of sexual liaisons, children forced to grow up too soon, and natural disaster. Some characters are fleshed out more carefully than others, but no reader will soon forget Freud's rhapsodic descriptions of the village or its inhabitants, who, like the weather, are alternately morose and incandescent. Normal for Suffolk
By D. P. Birkett
It may unfair to Esther Freud to begin a review by pointing out that she is the great-granddaughter of you-know-who, but it would be unfair to the reader not to mention it, because one of the themes is the German-Jewish refugee experience in England and one of her characters is a psychoanalyst. The author adds to the relevance of her personal background by providing a list of acknowledgements at the end that almost suggests we have been reading a roman a clef.

There are two main settings, seaside communities on opposite shores of the North Sea. One is a meticulously described East Anglian village, Steerborough, the other a German island (which might actually be in the Baltic).

The two main plots are set 50 years apart in time. One is the story, set in the fifties, of a refugee architect, Klaus, and his wife, Elsa, the other is the story of Lily,a student of architectural history, who is studying the life and work of Klaus and worrying about her relationship with her London architect lover, Nick.

Several other plots are interlinked. Lily gets involved with Grae who is desperately trying to care for two young daughters, Emm and Arry, reminiscent of the wonderful ones in "Hideous Kinky," and who may or may not be the guilty party in his violent relationship with their mother. Elsa has an affair with the deaf artist Max, who is painting a panorama of Steerborough.

It sounds complicated, and there are many subtleties and nuances that will repay a second reading, but the characters are so well demarcated, their dialog is so realistic, and their actions flow so naturally from their personalities, that it is never hard to follow for pure entertainment.

Lovely, romantic, and touching
By Lev Raphael
Though the twin stories took a while to clarify themselves in this reader's mind, once they did, the novel was quietly hypnotic as it wove together themes of loss, love, and historic tragedy. Set in a seaside English town today and in the early 50s, the book is suffused by a sense of isolation and longing, of human insignificance in the face of the limitless waters that can erase whole cities over time. The prose was beautiful and I read many passages over to savor the author's vision.

Slow and Dull
By L. Osterman
This novel starts out very slow and uninteresting and only barely picks up. It paints vivid pictures of the coastal town and even of the characters in a physical way. But the main part of the story, the relationships, falls flat and remains ambiguous. With the interesting lives led by all the characters, in both timelines, so much more could have been developed. The actions of Lily, Max, and Elsa all seem random and without any motivation. It did offer interesting information about Germany and it's peoples lives before and during WWII.

A Story of Sin: Surrealism in Polish Cinema, by Agnieszka Taborska, Marcin Gizycki, Jonathan L. Owen, Kamila Kuc, Daniel Bird, Michael O'P

'A Story of Sin' is an attempt at a reconstruction of Surrealist traditions in Polish cinema. The book reveals the repressed, obscure and alternative aspects of Polish cinematography by providing an invaluable guide to the Surrealistic 'terra incognita' whose outline authors recognise in films by Wojciech Jerzy Has, Walerian Borowczyk, Andrzej Zulawski, Roman Polanski, Jan Lenica, Piotr Szulkin, Grzegorz Krolikiewicz, Tadeusz Konwicki and others. Can Surrealist tradition provide an inspiring alternative to realism in Polish cinematography? What are the features specific to Polish Surrealism; how should it be placed in a cultural and socio-political context, bearing in mind strong Romantic traditions, Catholicism, and the experiences from the Communist era? CONTENTS: The Daydreams of Wojciech J. Has / The 'Red Wall of Surealism' in Experimental and Animated Film After the Thaw / Motion Without Escape: The Bleak Surrealism of Czech and Polish Animation / A Cruel Imagination: Roman Polanski's Short Films / Devil's Games: Surrealism in Polish Émigré Cinema / Mad Love Between Obsession and Myth: Foreplay on Images of Women and Men, Ways of Depicting Erotica and Its (un)Exploited Potential in Polish Cinema / Walerian Borowczyk's 'Blanche': Courtly Love, Lacan and Surrealism / Surreality: An Unfinished Project / Utopia, Dystopia, Escape: Surrealism and Polish Science Fiction/Fantasy Cinema / Two Worlds, Two Poetics: Magical Realism and Surrealism in Polish Film / 'The Case Against the Real World': Surrealism in Polish Cinema After 1989

Wonderful Sentimental Connotations
By Mitchell Silvius
I am so very impressed and inspired by the creativity and originality Christy Miller displayed in writing this delightful little short story. The concept of basing the story around an ordinary object and using it in a way to conjure up wonderful sentimental connotations in the reader's mind is phenomenal; I appreciated that very much. So for only 99 cents, I couldn't have asked for more. It is truly worth the purchase.

The most simple yet AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS recipes for your pressure cooker. THANK YOU Marian Getz!!
By Carol J. Rollins Kloetzly
Purchased this pressure cooker book on HSN and my first recipe to make was the split pea and bacon soup (amazing in 15 minutes!) and the scalloped potatoes and ham (you will never make a different version), but my FAVORITE is Wolfgang's Reisfleisch; beyond delicious :-). This book is out of stock, but I'm certain it will return soon. Honestly, the recipes are simple but over the moon delicious. Best buy of the year!!

Disciplined Agile Delivery: A Practitioner's Guide to Agile Software Delivery in the Enterprise (IBM Press), by Scott W. Ambler, Mark Line

Master IBM’s Breakthrough DAD Process Framework for Succeeding with Agile in Large, Complex, Mission-Critical IT Projects

It is widely recognized that moving from traditional to agile approaches to build software solutions is a critical source of competitive advantage. Mainstream agile approaches that are indeed suitable for small projects require significant tailoring for larger, complex enterprise projects. In Disciplined Agile Delivery, Scott W. Ambler and Mark Lines introduce IBM’s breakthrough Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) process framework, which describes how to do this tailoring. DAD applies a more disciplined approach to agile development by acknowledging and dealing with the realities and complexities of a portfolio of interdependent program initiatives.

Ambler and Lines show how to extend Scrum with supplementary agile and lean strategies from Agile Modeling (AM), Extreme Programming (XP), Kanban, Unified Process (UP), and other proven methods to provide a hybrid approach that is adaptable to your organization’s unique needs. They candidly describe what practices work best, why they work, what the trade-offs are, and when to consider alternatives, all within the context of your situation.

Disciplined Agile Delivery addresses agile practices across the entire lifecycle, from requirements, architecture, and development to delivery and governance. The authors show how these best-practice techniques fit together in an end-to-end process for successfully delivering large, complex systems--from project initiation through delivery.

Coverage includes

  • Scaling agile for mission-critical enterprise endeavors
  • Avoiding mistakes that drive poorly run agile projects to chaos
  • Effectively initiating an agile project
  • Transitioning as an individual to agile
  • Incrementally building consumable solutions
  • Deploying agile solutions into complex production environments
  • Leveraging DevOps, architecture, and other enterprise disciplines
  • Adapting your governance strategy for agile projects

Based on facts, research, and extensive experience, this book will be an indispensable resource for every enterprise software leader and practitioner--whether they’re seeking to optimize their existing agile/Scrum process or improve the agility of an iterative process.

“Mark and Scott not only made me think, they reminded me of lots of things that I had forgotten. Things that the agile fashion police have made uncool to talk about. This book is not about fashionable agile; it is about serious change, and it should be required reading for any change leader.”

--Dave West, chief product officer, Tasktop, and former VP and research director Forrester Research

“Finally, a practical down-to-earth guide that is true to agile values and principles while at the same time acknowledging the realities of the business and the bigger picture. You will find no purist dogma here, nor any hype or hyperbole. Ambler and Lines show how to navigate the varied contexts and constraints of both team-level and enterprise-level needs to hit the agile ‘sweet spot’ for your team and attain the real benefits of sustainable agility. I wish I’d had this book ten years ago!”

--Brad Appleton, agile/lean development champion for a large fortune 150 telecommunications company

“We have found the guidance from Disciplined Agile Delivery to be a great help in customizing our PMO governance for agile projects at CP Rail. The book will definitely be on the must-read list for teams using agile delivery.”

--Larry Shumlich, project manager coach, Canadian Pacific Railway

“This book is destined to become the de facto standard reference guide for any organization trying to apply agile/scrum in a complex environment. Scott and Mark provide practical guidance and experiences from successful agile teams on what it takes to bring an end-to-end agile delivery lifecycle to the enterprise.”

--Elizabeth Woodward, IBM agile community leader, coauthor of A Practical Guide to Distributed Scrum

“There are many ways to achieve the benefits of agility, so it’s really encouraging to see a pragmatic and usable ‘umbrella’ description that encapsulates most of these without becoming a diluted kind of ‘best of’ compilation, or a one-size-fits-all. Great reading for anyone orientating themselves in an ever-growing and complex field.”

--Nick Clare, agile coach/principal consultant, Ivar Jacobson International

“Scott and Mark have compiled an objective treatment of a tough topic. Loaded with insights from successful application under game conditions, this book strikes a good balance between progressive agilists looking to accelerate change and conservative organizational managers looking for scalable solutions.”

--Walker Royce, chief software economist, IBM

“Disciplined Agile Delivery, a hybrid and experience-based approach to software delivery, reflects the growing trend toward pragmatism and away from the anti-syncretism that has plagued the software development industry for over 40 years. I commend Scott and Mark for writing this book and showing the leadership necessary to take our profession to the next level.”

--Mark Kennaley, CTO, Software-Development-Experts.com; author of SDLC 3.0: Beyond a Tacit Understanding of Agile

“I’ve seen ‘certified agile’ run rampant in an organization and create more severe problems than it solved. Finally, we have a definitive source on how to apply agile pragmatically with discipline to deliver success. Thanks, Scott and Mark.”

--Carson Holmes, EVP, service delivery, Fourth Medium Consulting, Inc.

Agile Done Right!!!!
By T Anderson
I was excited to see that Mr. Ambler was working on Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) and was looking forward to this book. One of the biggest challenges I have is that most of the successful agile teams I interact with are isolated small teams using Scrum out of the box. It is working on the projects that have small teams with small scope, usually building one application in isolation. They don't have to be concerned with enterprise level integration.

The small successful teams I have seen also do no architecture. Although the end result is exactly what you do not want for high modifiability, they simply get it live. Usually a little buggy and slow, but they make it live nevertheless.

That is not true of all the projects I interact with. There are some large enterprise wide Scrum initiatives. The successful ones brought in an external Scrum coach to train them. Because of the complexity of the project they were also forced to do architecture and design. They ended up back at more of an iterative process. By the time they were done modifying the Scrum process, beside some Scrum names, they were much closer to the Unified Process than Scrum.

Until now my primary resource for information, that I also consider good information, implementing agile practices at an enterprise level has been Scaled Agile Framework. It is completely covered in the book Agile Software Requirements: Lean Requirements Practices for Teams, Programs, and the Enterprise. The Scaled Agile Framework is great, but I am glad to have this second resource!!! The attempts to sell Scrum of Scrums for dealing with enterprise level concerns has failed miserably.

It has been a wild ride. When it was all about UP, RUP, EUP, PLE, and Waterfall I was always in a battle to trim back the process ceremony in order avoid waste being template zombies. Then the Agile Age of Aquarius took over and I couldn't get anyone to give any thought to anything before riding off into cowboy coding bliss. The majority of the projects went from tons of worthless documents to tons of worthless code!!!!

After spending a lot of time battling the Agile Age of Aquarius coding cowboys I am so thankful some of the leaders in the industry, like the authors of this book, are starting to swing the pendulum back the other way. I just wish people would get that it's about tailoring to meet the needs of a project with the resources available. One shoe size doesn't fit everyone.

The book goes into great detail explaining the need for DAD and break it down into digestible parts. The book has 7 parts. I have listed them below with the chapters in each.

Chapter 25: Parting Thoughts

DAD is a hybrid of agile methods including Scrum, XP, Agile Modeling, Lean, Agile Data, and the Unified Process. It does what so many successful Agile projects are doing today that are larger in size. It uses what works, when its needed, and leaves the Agile Zealot Elitist Attitude behind. It is so refreshing to read an Agile book without the attitude.

DAD recognizes Scrum's shortcomings as primarily focused on management and brings back architecture and includes agile development practices that are easily excused from most Scrum projects.

DAD includes phases. It includes a project initiation and release activities that are missing from Scrum. DAD has three phases Inception, Construction, and Transition.

DAD also comes in two flavors, basic and advanced. The primary difference is that advanced is for more experienced teams that can take advantage of lean strategies which eliminates the iterations and the work item stack in favor of the work item pool. The book primarily focuses on the basic DAD process.

The only complaint I have about the book is that the diagrams showing the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Basic, and the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Advanced should have been full page diagrams. They are too small to read in the book. It is not really a big deal since they are available on the web.

The book is really well written. It is very detailed and also entertaining making very easy to read. Throughout the book "Lessons from the Trenches" sidebars bring real world experience to the topics being covered.

The authors also include a case study for each of the phases they cover based on a project that builds a point of sale system. This gives the reader the opportunity to see the artifact creating activities in action.

All in all I found the book to be an excellent resource for the agilist looking to move beyond small develop teams. It is an absolute must read for enterprise architects and other senior management working in the IT shop.

Many "agile" buzzwords describing a 30 year old process
By Rony Atoun
Ultimately, when you strip the text of the agile terminology, what you get is an anecdotal description of a standard iterative approach, much better delivered in books like Walker Royce's "Software Project Management - A Unified framework". It reiterates what many software professionals already know: "Iterative" done right is agile. Worse, it brings no concrete metrics to back any of the claims and recommendations. The book addresses another well known fact: Traditional agile (usually meaning Scrum) does not scale up well for Enterprise IT projects requiring large project teams and delivering complex solutions.
The only redeeming value I found in the book is that it concentrates many well known engineering and Project Management best practices, but then again, books like Capers Jones's "Software Engineering Best Practices" do it better and back their findings with facts from well researched studies.

Finally, someone made an agile strategy for the enterprise.
By Shane Willerton
Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) adds yet another agile `flavor' to the many currently floating out there. What differentiates DAD from the other Agile flavors is that it incorporates many of the best practices of the non-Agile methodologies in order to achieve what the authors refer to as `Agility@scale'. Too often, agile practices can involve starting from scratch and working in a vacuum. This will work well for small, self-organizing teams working on isolated software development. For the rest of us working in Enterprise I.T., working on small, isolated teams is simply not an option. The integration points too many, the effort too large, infrastructure too intensive or costly and the co-ordination costs are high.
This is where DAD steps in. The authors ambitiously strive to seek a balance between the best of the Agile and Non-Agile project management body of knowledge. Their emphasis is on delivering solutions, not just software. Also, the authors also note the wisdom of leveraging existing infrastructure and enterprise solutions without building from scratch. This is still an Agile approach but one focused more on realities of the medium to large I.T. implementations rather than the small ones. Whereas most Agile approaches strive to keep teams as small as possible, this approach attempts to scale them up for larger projects by creating (potentially) multiple small teams but by putting in place a minimalist project management co-ordination necessary to keep those teams working for the same goals. The authors leverage Lean practices, Extreme Programming (XP), Open Unified Process (OpenUp), Scrum, Agile Modeling and Agile Data approaches, as well as a number of other sources, to scale up the successes that Agile approaches have had on smaller implementations.

All in all, this is a very good book on a very much needed topic. With all the acronyms and frequent project manager-speak, it can be a little rough of a read. This is a good choice for a Project Manager or Team Lead who is struggling to fit their enterprise effort into the small teams recommended by most Agile methods.
