This is the Older Version of this Book

Look at the cover where it just says "25 Recipes" at the bottom. The newer edition of the book says "25 Sweet and Savory Recipes" instead and is available here: Le Creuset Mini-Cocotte: 25 Sweet and Savory Recipes.

That said, with so many people reviewing this book and saying the recipes weren't cut down well to cook in mini-cocottes, even though Le Creuset is putting out the book specifically for that purpose, I decided to also try Cooking en Cocotte (Les Petits Plats Francais) (which is in ENGLISH, by the way), and I can highly recommend that book instead for showing a wide variety of things you can cook in these small pots.

These mini-cocottes are rather silly, since they're so tiny at 8 ounces (1 cup) capacity virtually every recipe shows them with stuff sticking out past the top and the lid off, so why not just buy these insead, where you can get a set for the price of one of these cocottes, and it will be 4 ounces bigger and look more elegant on your plate anyway: Bia Cordon Bleu Oslo White Porcelain 12-Ounce Ramekin, Set of 4. (I also use the 6 ounce size for pots de creme. They're terrific, and beautiful white porcelain.)

Fun recipe book if you already bought mini-cocottes

If you own the mini-cocottes this is a must, since it provides a few recipes and, more importantly, ideas on how to use these particular little stoneware pots. Could do with more recipes, however; however the authors clearly state that only 25 recipes are included.

One complaint: the type is printed in color-coordinated ink colors to match the pictures. Imagine trying to read a recipe printed in pale yellow or sky blue. Pretty but worthless.

Richard Condon (1915-1996) is a political novelist from New York who wrote over 26 satirical thrillers throughout a prolific career—dealing with themes of political corruption, greed, and abuse of power. Before his career as a novelist, Condon served in the US Merchant Marines and later became a Hollywood publicist, agent, and advertising writer.

Condon’s best-selling works include The Manchurian Candidate and the Prizzi series, dealing with the life of a crime family in New York. The Manchurian Candidate was made into a movie twice, once in 1962 and again in 2004. The 1962 movie starred Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role.

A Boy and His Mother

Louis Menard points out his excellent introduction to The Manchurian Candidate that Richard Condon's novel is about control, conditioning, and manipulation. Raymond Shaw and his fellow G.I.s are captured in Korea, undergo "brainwashing", and are released believing that they, through the heroism of Sergeant Shaw, have been saved from a company of enemy infantry. The encounter never took place, of course, but that's the story that will win Raymond the Medal of Honor. However, Raymond has been conditioned to be the ulimate assassin. Meanwhile Major Marco, Raymond's commanding officer in Korea, has been having terrible nightmares in which he sees Raymond killing two members of their patrol in cold blood. He also sees himself and his patrol on a stage facing some high ranking Soviet and Chinese officals. The staggering nightmares cause Marco to start wondering if he, Raymond, and the others have been brainwashed. This leads him on a frantic investigation to discover the truth before something disastrous happens. Raymond can't recall any of what Marco has been dreaming about. He has been completely conditioned twice over -- once by the Pavlovian doctors and also by his mother, Mrs. Iselin, probably the most evil villainess in all of literature. She is the embodiment of Control and she savages anyone who gets in the way of her plans for domination. The Manchurian Candidate is very fine writing. Condon's style is eccentric but it is perfect for the bizarre, paranoid tale he is telling. His portrayal of Raymond as a damned soul is moving. Raymond, who is cursed with "crushing contemptuousness", is "impossible to like", but we can't help but be sympathetic to this young man who was never allowed to be himself, who was never allowed to feel. Mrs. Iselin is over-the-top, but who cares? She sends chills down your spine while providing some wicked humor. The Manchurian Candidate is a Freudian cocktail that will give you lots to chew on.

Highly original, chilling political thriller

This is a great DVD with many excellent bonus features, including the Director's commentary that adds so much to the understanding of how the film was made. The film was shot primarily with wide angle lenses which heightens the effect of some very frightening screens. For example is there anything more incredible than the scene where the captured, brainwashed prisoners believe they are attending a ladies' garden party, while actually on stage as human guinea pigs in a meeting of communist cadres. Just an amazing juxtaposition of images! The storyline is well developed and never loses the taut feeling of suspense from start to finish. Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, and Angela Lansbury are particularly fine in their roles. If there is only one criticism, it is that Harvey lapses at times into his original British accent, which is disconcerting. But given the power of his performance in this role, this is a minor detail that can easily be overlooked. The film is shot in black and white, which is far better suited to its cold war images. Just puzzled why MGM issued the cover for this DVD in color? Anyway, highly recommend this DVD!

Had to read this book for a college class. ... This is an awesome book. It's a military psychological thriller in which some POW US soldiers are brainwashed and sent home; all programmed to do damage to the government when they get there. Given that the men are war heroes, it isn't hard for them to get a foot in the door where they can really wreak havoc. The plot twists around in ways too creepy to be believed, yet too familiar to be completely discounted...heh heh heh. It's definitely readable as a thriller, but does good double duty as a quasi sci-fi conspiracy novel, not to mention the informed and responsible portrayal of US military intelligence. I wanted to call it Kurt Vonnegut meets Tom Clancy, but that's not doing it justice. Maybe it's out-of-print because it couldn't find a niche. Or maybe THEY don't want you to read it.

About the Author
Marie Louise Stig Sørensen is a Reader in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and Professor of Bronze Age Studies at Leiden University. She coordinates the University of Cambridge's postgraduate degree programme in archaeological heritage and museums, one of the first degree courses in this field. She has considerable research experience, including partnerships on projects such as the EU project Emergence of European Societies, the Leverhulme-funded project Changing Beliefs of the Human Body, the Hera-funded Investigation of Creativity and Craft Production in Middle and Late Bronze Age Europe, and the Cultural Heritage and the Reconstruction of Identities after Conflict - EU FP7 (CRIC) project. Her publications include Heritage Studies: Methods and Approaches (co-edited with John Carman, 2009).

Dacia Viejo-Rose is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow (2012-14) based at the University of Cambridge. Her current research project is on cultural violence and violence against culture. She is the author of Reconstructing Spain: Cultural Heritage and Memory after Civil War (2011). Viejo-Rose was coordinator of the European Cultural Foundation's UK national committee, organising a series of seminars at Chatham House (2003-5). She also worked at UNESCO in the Department of Cultural Policies for Development (2000-2), where she managed the UNESCO Cities for Peace Prize. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow on the Cultural Heritage and the Reconstruction of Identities after Conflict - EU FP7 (CRIC) project.

Conventional wisdom has it that giant breweries, driven by corporate greed, have flooded the U.S. with inferior-tasting swill, and the only beer worth drinking is from scattered boutique microbrewers. Nonsense, says Ogle: companies like Miller and Anheuser-Busch are actually near-perfect embodiments of the American dream (in which "liberty nurtured ambition, and ambition fostered success")—and if their beers became noticeably blander 50 years ago, it's because consumers wanted it that way. Ogle (All the Modern Conveniences) looks back at the early years of brewers like Phillip Best, Frederick Pabst and Adolphus Busch as they rose to success making European-style beers for fellow immigrants, converting plenty of native palates along the way. Such men, she claims, should be heralded as captains of industry like Gilded Age icon J.P. Morgan. This material is strong, as is Ogle's analysis of the slow but steady rise of the Prohibition movement, but her narrative loses momentum as she tries to encompass the post–WWII era and add the most successful microbrewers to her list of heroes. an astoundingly good business history

Ogle is a historian but not an academic. So while this is carefully researched, it's superlatively written, a good read that I assign to students in a course on the Economics of Strategy (aka "Industrial Organization"). It contains a lot of material on the impact of technology on the industry, from the rise of microbiology and refrigeration in the late 1800s to advertising, to the impact of Prohibition on the industry (including downstream distribution) and logistics in the 1960s to the rise of microbreweries today. In class I pair it with a visit to a local, exceptionally well-run microbrewery (Devils Backbone) whose COO can explain how their cost structure has shifted as they've expanded in scale, as well as the impact of the post-Prohibition tiered distribution system in Virginia and surrounding states that prevents them from setting prices to retailers (they charge xxx to their distributor, who then sells on to retailers – Kroger, Food Lion and Giant in this case – who then set their own prices... Ogle provides a great foundation for their being able to ask intelligent questions, and for writing papers.

A story for beer aficionado's, history buffs, or brewing insiders

Once I had penetrated the first three chapters of this book, I found it a fascinating and quick read. However, those first three chapters took about two weeks, despite a persistent interest in beer and brewing. I covered the remaining five chapters in two days.

The first several chapters (and 40 or so years of chronology) cover the beginnings of American brewing by explaining the origins of the Best brewery (which would become Pabst), the Uihlein's (Schlitz), and Adolphus Busch. These chapters passed slowly, and didn't entertain the way that popular history can (like Winchester's A Crack in the Edge of the World or Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, Stephen Ambrose, etc).

However, I was extremely engaged by everything that followed. I thought the explanation of the causes and context of Prohibition was excellent. The narrative of changes in brewing in post-World War II America (consolidation, the dawn of modern marketing) was also very interesting, and did a nice job integrating societal and business changes into that story. I erroneously thought I'd experienced first-hand the rise of craft beer in America, but Maureen did a very nice job educating me on the true origins of this trend.

I was bogged down by the beginning of this book, but thrilled with the middle and end of it. This book would be a great resource for beer connoisseurs looking for an understanding of why American brewing is what it is, and as a cautionary tale for brewing executives.
