In defense of faith versus fear

This book is both timely and helpful in light of current teachings which promote the idea that those who have trusted in Jesus Christ for eternal life, may in fact be "cast into outer darkness", due to a lack of fruitfulness in their lives. Such teachings make a mockery of the clear promises of the word of God, replace the confidence of our faith with the uncertainty of fear, and turn the grace of God into a "bait and switch" deception.

Pastor Rokser and his team are to be commended for providing clear and convincing teaching to combat this unhealthy trend in Christian circles today. The so called "problem texts" of Scripture are approached with scholarship, honesty, and consistency, resulting in a convincing refutation of the "outer darkness" position. The end result is a fine blend of the assurance of our standing in Christ, and of encouragement to faithful and fruitful living in the Christian life, based on faith and gratitude, not fear. The theme of the book throughout is consistent with the exhortations of the Apostle Paul in Gal.3:11 that "the just shall live by faith", and in Col.2:6 "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him."

Not A Stand Alone Text

If you can understand all the examples in this book, then you're name is Mark Allen Weiss. You will need other references unless you have a good instructor that can explain it to you. Are there better books on Algorithms available? Not that I have found. The code that Weiss has available from his website may or may not be complete. For example, the Vector class is missing line 71 "int numToCopy = newCapacity < theSize ? newCapacity : theSize;".

Weiss is releasing a new version of this in fall of 2011.

A good supplement to go along with this book is Clifford Shaffer's "A Practical Introduction to Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis: Third Edition". Shaffer offers his book for free on his website at Virginia Tech.

"Introduction to Algorithms, Third Edition" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest and Stein is good.

Not Bad, Not Good Either

This is the biggest problem with the text book (from the author's web site at [...])

"This is the only way to get solutions. I do not have any copies of solutions manuals. As a matter of policy, I cannot provide answers to questions in the text, because it is impossible for me to determine if I would be doing somebody's homework. Thus, I must decline to answer the growing number of emails that request such assistance. "

Mr. Weiss, I respectfully disagree. While it is not your job to *do* someone's homework, it is your job to help them find their way. Certainly, not via email. But there's an implied contract when the book is purchased that there will be sufficient methods of gaining proficiency. Aside from trying to write the data structures on your own, there is no other way. The questions are pointless if the only way to get a solution manual is to be an instructor and buy it from the publisher's sales rep, you're cheating the student out of what you were paid to do! Take the time to create more questions, supply only the even or odd answers, but for God's sake have mercy upon the souls of the students stuck for 16 weeks with your book!

With that out of the way, and assuming that you're a motivated student who digs computers, this book isn't bad at all. There are some notable problems as indicated in other reviews. The path to examples can be poorly laid out, and the source code can be confusing. And at times, the book can lean into confusing the reader to the point of making them give up.

An example of this is on page 161 discussing B-Trees and sizing M and L. Mr. Weiss gives a run down of how to select these variables for the B-Tree, using sentences such as "32M-32 bytes". Uhm, in the context of "32M and 32 bytes", is that 32 megabytes or 32 times the variable M? Seems it could go either way, depending upon where the reader's mind has drifted. He does it again in the next sentence. The answer is that Mr. Weiss is talking about variable M, not M for megabytes. Quite possibly, a math major (or minor) would see this with little effort, but this is just one example of many where it's just not clear enough.

Graphs and their algorithms is probably the best part of the book. Here the writing is careful, with a pace that makes some rather confusing concepts easy to grasp.

Not readable at all!

This book was the required text book for my 3rd computer science course. The previous two courses used the book, C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structures by Malik. I used to read that book every night because I enjoyed it so much. But not this book!

Reading this book is like talking to those kind of people who intentionally talk over your head just to prove how smart they are. The examples are terrible, and more emphasis is put on runtime cost than actually explaining the algorithm. I understand it's a book about algorithm analysis, but I do expect the algorithm to be explained before its cost is analyzed.

I'm pretty sure the author could make tying a shoe seem like the most daunting task in the world.

Wisconsin's Past and Present

If only every state had this kind of historical atlas to put its society, economy, and all other aspects of its past into historical perspective. The map selection is detailed and thorough, the map drawings are crisp and presetable. The text fully supports the maps. The book covers settlement, origianl native tribes, the economic growth, the development of counties, it even covers which NFL football teams either have in the past or are presently training in Wisconsin. It covers the little known milk strikes (little known outside of Wisconsin) of 1933.

I was a bit skeptical at first because every volume I found in bookstores had a plastic wrap around the book making it impossible to review its contents before I purchased it. The price was also a bit steep. But Amazon was about $15 less than bookstores so I figured I'd take the chance and purchase it. I was not disappointed. Again, all states should have dedicated cartographers who want to explain their state's history in maps. It may not be the end all books on Wisconsin's history, but by reading this book one comes away with a feel for what the Wisconsin experience was all about. I highly recommend this book.

Not an accurate book from a Luxembourger's point of view

While I appreciate many sections of the book, the authors make the age-old mistake of equating Luxembourger immigrants with Germans or Germanic-speaking peoples. That's like equating the Finns with Russians by virtue of geographic location. It just is not accurate. Luxembourgers settled in Ozaukee County as early as 1845 or so. They did not then and still do not today equate themselves with being German in any manner or form! In fact, many immigrants from the Palatinate, Hesse, the Trier area, etc., considered themselves to be more like Luxembourgers in identity.
Luxembourgers have a unique, rich history all of their own and it is constantly overlooked by those not versed in Luxembourg history or immigration. So here we have another book where they as a unique ethnic population are non-entities---this would not happen if they were American Indians, that's for sure. Luxembourgers had one of the largest 19th century immigration settlements of the United States in what was old Washington County and would become Ozaukee County in 1853.
And are these authors SURE that the first cheese factory was in Sheboygan Falls? That's not the way I hear it living here in Ozaukee County, but that's open to interpretation.

Highly recommended

As a student of Wisconsin's natural and human history all my life, this book is a Godsend for its fine graphics and outstanding presentation of historical minutiae. I particularly appreciate its statewide focus that avoids Madisonian or Milwaukeean parochialism. "One must caress the details, the divine details" - The authors have done this in this obvious labor of love. Probably one of the top five books ever written on the geography and history of Wisconsin.

Emilia Fox's reading sparkles with sophistication and intelligence. Her voice is arched but good humored and carefully pointed, with all the barbs subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, exposed. Character, however, is Fox's real strength. From the outset Mrs. Bennet's voice horrifies us, as it does her daughter, and we feel all Elizabeth's embarrassment at such a mother, not to mention Mr. Darcy's repugnance. Caroline Bingley's voice drips with unction when addressing Darcy, but communicates an acid tone with Eliza. Even Lady Catherine's crotchety hauteur and Mr. Collins's obsequiousness draw smiles. A skillful artist, Fox brings them all to life, rendering accessible to a wider audience all the author's good sense and humor. A finely crafted audio recording of the beloved classic

One is humbled to review a book considered a classic of world literature. What could I possibly say about PRIDE AND PREJUDICE that has not been scrutinized by scholars, exalted by enthusiasts or bemoaned by students who have been forced to read it and just don't get what all the fuss is about? Plenty, and that is one of its enduring charms. It is so many things to different people. I have read it every year for *ahem* more years than I wish to admit, and still laugh out loud at Austen's dry wit, wily social commentary and satisfying love story. It often tops international polls as the "the most loved" or "favorite book" of all time, numerous stage and screen adaptations continue to remind us of its incredible draw to the modern audience and its hero and heroine Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet may be the most famous romantic couple short of Romeo and Juliet. High praise indeed for a novel written almost two hundred years ago by a country clergyman's daughter, home schooled by her father and unexalted in her lifetime.

Set in the early nineteenth-century country village of Longbourn in Hertfordshire, the story revolves around the Bennet family and their five unmarried daughters. They are the first family of consequence in the village, unfortunately the Longbourn estate is entailed by default to a male heir, their cousin Mr. William Collins. This is distressful to Mrs. Bennet who knows that she must find husbands for her daughters or they shall all be destitute if her husband should die. Mr. Bennet is not as concerned and spends his time in his library away from his wife's idle chatter and social maneuvering. The second eldest daughter Elizabeth is spirited and confident, wanting only to marry for love. She teases her eldest sister Jane that she must catch a wealthy husband with her beauty and good nature to support them. The three younger sisters Mary, Catherine and Lydia hinder their sister's chances for a good match by inappropriate and unguarded behavior.

When Mr. Bingley, a single man of large fortune, moves into the neighborhood with his fashionable sisters he attends the local Assembly Ball and is immediately taken with beautiful Jane Bennet. His friend Mr. Darcy is even richer with a great estate in Derbyshire, but he is proud and arrogant giving offense to all including Elizabeth by refusing to dance with her. She overhears him tell Bingley that she was only tolerable and not handsome enough to tempt him. This amuses and annoys her enough to repeat it to her friends and family. The whole community declares him the most disagreeable man, eaten up with pride. And thus the famous love story begins. How Mr. Darcy's pride will be humbled and Elizabeth's prejudices dissolved is one of the greatest stories of all time. Austen's astute characterizations and plot machinations never cease to amaze. Society has changed in two hundred years, but human nature, foibles and all, remains constant, much to our amusement and delight.

Naxos Audiobooks presents us with a professionally produced and finely crafted jewel in this audio recording of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Narrated by British actress Emilia Fox, viewers of the 1995 miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle will remember her fine performance as shy Georgiana Darcy and be pleasantly surprised by her vocal range and emotional depth in characterization. I particularly appreciated her interpretation of Mrs. Bennet's frazzled anxiety and Lady Catherine de Bourgh imperious resolve. Listeners will enjoy all thirteen hours of this unabridged recording honoring one of the greatest novels ever written and want to seek out the other six Austen novels that they have also recorded in audio format.

careless mistake in reading should not slipped by...

Emelia Fox is very enjoyable to listen to in her reading of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. She is very familiar with the content and its expression, having played the part of Georgiana Darcy in the, now famous, A & E production of the film version of this book. There is at least one unfortunate mistake in her reading which Naxos should not have over-looked. It is the mis-reading of the work "innocent" as "ignorant" on the last CD, and alters the meaning of Darcy's compliment, rendering it senseless. One is left wondering how many times this type of error slips by, which the listener does not catch, in other Naxos productions.
