Mother and the Motherland...

Albert Camus won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. Three years later, at the age of 46, he died in a car crash, in the small village of Villeblevin, on the N6, between Fontainbleau and Sens. The manuscript for this book was in the car with him. It was obviously still incomplete, and this is reflected in various notes when the book was finally published in 1994. Gallimard, his publisher, also died in the crash. Camus is buried in Lourmarin, in the Vaucluse. With some much needed guidance, I've been realizing of late that Camus was a much better author, and human, than Jean-Paul Sartre. This work helps confirm that, and takes Sartre "out of my mouth" a bit.

The first chapter depicts the circumstances surrounding his birth, in 1913, in Mondovi (now Dréan) Algeria, which is south of Bône (now Annaba). As an Algerian of European origin, he is known as a "pied-noir," literally a black foot. The origin of the term is unknown, subject to much speculation. He never knew his father, a poor agricultural worker, who died less than a year later, in the Battle of the Marne. He was raised by his mother, who was half Spanish, and worked most of her life as a maid, along with his grandmother, and an uncle. Much later in his life, in the 1950's, he visited his father's grave which is in St. Brieuc, in Brittany (his father had been evacuated from the front, and died at a military hospital there). His youth was dominated by the economic poverty of his family's circumstances, because the original "breadwinner" was missing. Camus became "the first man" when he earned, at a very youthful age, his first paycheck from a summer job.

The book primarily relates Camus' childhood, with some chapters from the "present," that is, the `50's, after the commencement of the war in Algeria. As an American I found a "Spanky and our gang" quality to the tales of youth he related; for example, with a group of his buddies, sneaking off to the local park, avoiding the caretaker, and knocking coconuts out of the palm trees in order to enjoy their freshness, and then it was off to the beach, always knowing there would be "consequences" when one arrived home. Other vignettes including going to see the silent movies of the time, with the piano player who wore gloves, even in the summer heat, with his grandmother, who was illiterate, and who would make a point of loudly saying that she had "forgotten her glasses" (for reading the sub-titles) so her inability to read would not be apparent as Camus read her the sub-titles. He also describes a one-day hunting trip into the "bled" with his uncle Ernest (Etienne) that would be worthy of Pagnol's My Father's Glory & My Mother's Castle: Marcel Pagnol's Memories of Childhood. Rich, warm, humane remembrances, of the people of Algeria, and the natural world in which they lived.

One teacher truly made a difference, M. Bernard. He saw Camus' potential (along with a few other students) and worked hard to obtain scholarships for them, including visiting Camus's mother to argue his case, so that he not be required to work at an early age. Interwoven through the entire memoir is his deep love and empathy for his mother who raised and cared for him despite dire economic circumstances. It helps shed light on a remark he had been criticized for, one made in Stockholm, after receiving the Nobel, concerning his mother and justice. It also helps to know that throughout his life he was a strong advocate of justice for the native Algerians.

Moving also were some of the vignettes from the `50's. Camus visits his mother in her apartment, life seems to have defeated her, despite her son's success, and I thought of a line from an old John Prine song, about the elderly, and their perceptions: "...and all the news just repeats itself..." Camus attempts to find the farm where he was born. Everyone who might have known his parents were gone, and even their children are gone. He is greeted by an old "colon" farmer, who, as he says, "is denounced by Paris," and who has already sent his family to Marseilles, and is determined to continue to live, and probably die on his farm.

Almost a million Algerians of European origin, pieds-noirs, were forced to flee to metropolitan France in 1962, and were "poorly" received there. This book, in part, gives an insight into who they were... and are. An excellent read, and a good recommendation. 5-stars, plus.

A tribute to the value of education and the enduring impact of a committed teacher - the path out of poverty for the fortunate talented few.

Page-turning legal thriller and family drama

This is as much a nuanced family drama, love story, and social inquisition as it is a murder/courtroom/legal thriller. If you can engage with the narrator, whose reliability or unreliability is a puzzle to piece together, you will be satisfied with this warm yet dark story of a community and family unhinged by a violent crime. The author is a former DA who is skilled at informing the reader about the law and procedure without telegraphing it. The narrative is even, polished, and intelligently observant of a community in shock, a family shattered.

I have relatives in Newton, Massachusetts, where this thriller takes place. It is an upscale community of educated professionals, whose children graduate from tony high schools and go on to Ivy League colleges. A fourteen-year-old boy stabbed to death in the park is incomprehensible to this insulated and well-heeled population. As prosperous as it is, there is also a provincial air to it, as like-minded families have always experienced security and safety here, and there is an expectation and history of benevolence. Violence is rare.

Jacob, the fourteen-year-old son of First District Attorney Andy Barber, is accused of murdering his classmate, Ben Rifkin. In Massachusetts, fourteen-year-olds charged with first-degree murder are tried as adults. Barber narrates the story with depth and dread, exposing some family secrets along the way, which could impact the case, and creates increasing internal trauma for his wife, Laurie. Their marriage has always been an ongoing love story; they met as freshmen in college and have loved each other unfailingly through the years. This event mires them in vulnerability and heavy exposure to the media, placing them under a public microscope. Do they really know their son? How much can parents really get inside the soul of their children? And, no matter how strong a marriage seems, a blow like this can undermine what is truly a fragile trust.

Landay has a talent for metaphor and imagery, rendered beautifully in the elegiac narrative. Woven through the story, in the old-school typed transcript of a court reporter, is yet another narrative, of Barber as a witness before the grand jury. How this fits into the rest of the story is gradually disclosed, and its presence is both suspenseful and revealing. Landay's dialogue is crisply cinematic but organic to the characters. His flair for teen-speak is spot-on.

Jacob, who is largely inscrutable, is developed through the eyes of other characters--and at a slight remove, which adds to the suspense. Is he a cipher? A typical teenager? The unknown X factor of Jacob draws out the detective spirit of the reader. The character that really blossoms on the pages is Andy, who reveals, through his agony, more than his contained self-assessment. He is a tormented man trying to protect his family, but his tenacity and inexorable faith in his son may have dire consequences.

I read this book in two long sittings, and savored every page. Critically, one could point to some of the technical flaws, but personally, I greedily devoured every passage and capitulated to the subtle narrative.

An unsettling picture on an exquisite but disturbing canvas

I have just spent the entirety of one night and part of another reading a remarkable novel called DEFENDING JACOB. It's been a while since William Landay has graced the bookshelves with his presence, and his latest is quite different from his last effort, THE STRANGLER. While both books deal with family dynamics and loyalty, DEFENDING JACOB hits uncomfortably but unerringly close to home, as compelling a work as you are likely to pick up this year.

The basic premise of the book is deceptively simple. A 14-year-old boy named Jacob Barber, is accused of the murder of Ben Rifkin, one of his middle-school classmates. Jacob's father, Andy, has been an Assistant District Attorney for 22 years in the quiet Boston suburb that the family calls home. Andy does not consider his job a stepping stone to higher office; he is content to simply do the best job he can. So when Ben's body is first discovered, Andy takes charge of the initial investigation, working with the police in directing the gathering of evidence. But the investigation seems to proceed slowly, almost from the beginning, and when what evidence there is appears to point to Jacob as the killer, Andy is removed from the case and placed in the position of defending his son from the charges that, from his viewpoint, are most certainly false. In his mind, there can be no other conclusion.

Jacob's guilt or innocence is unknown throughout most of DEFENDING JACOB. But what is a certainty is that all is not right. Andy is a smart and experienced prosecutor who knows all too well how evidence can be wrongfully construed. Accordingly, he goes through Jacob's things, hiding this and destroying that and concealing the other. He does it with the chilling certitude that he is not protecting a murderer, but merely keeping his innocent son from a wrongful conviction. Innocent or guilty, there is something about Jacob that's wrong, and dreadfully so. What Andy construes as the quiet moodiness of adolescence in Jacob emerges as something that is much more unsettling and sinister. This is revealed through stories told by Jacob's friends, a number of whom take his involvement in Ben's murder as a cold, hard truth. At the same time, Andy harbors a secret about his past and ancestry that he has concealed from everyone and fears will be revealed, even as he agonizes over the possibility that his secret may well be the cause of Jacob's problems.

Andy's conflicts notwithstanding, it is Laurie Barber, Andy's wife and Jacob's mother, who slowly realizes the truth about her son during the investigation, arrest and trial. The difference between Andy and Laurie is that Andy cannot conceive of a world where his son committed murder; Laurie can, and it is the fact that she can believe such a thing could occur --- whether it did or not --- that causes her physical and mental deterioration. As the trial, verdict and aftermath unfold, the book ends not so much in a climax as it does in a series of explosive incidents and revelations, each greater than the next, until a rough justice of sorts is achieved. Or is it?

DEFENDING JACOB is one of those rare books that offers a riveting story in addition to raising profound questions and issues for which we do not have the knowledge or capability to answer yet. Is the human capacity for violence an inherited trait, or is it something we learn? How far can, and should, a parent go to protect a child? Is this judicial system an effective way to deal with criminals, or should alternative methods be considered? DEFENDING JACOB presents an unsettling picture on an exquisite but disturbing canvas, one that will haunt the reader long after the final sentences of the book are read.

Great Premise - Dragged Out

For me, this book had highs and lows. I'll start with the good stuff. The plot tackles multiple issues, expertly woven together, and laid out for us to ponder. At the heart of the story is the controversial topic of the `murder gene' and whether the propensity for violence is in our DNA. We question whether our family history changes how people perceive us. And, along with the characters, we wonder how far we would go to protect our child.

Now for the not so good stuff. I did not always find the parents, the father in particular, believable. He stumbles upon a few red flags with his son's activities, yet he never once confronts his son about these things. His character is a bit too much of an ostrich, sticking his head in the sand and pretending all is well. The characters aren't well-developed and I didn't connect well with any of them.

The biggest disappointment for me is the pace of the story. It drags. We spend a lot of time in the narrator's head and his thoughts become repetitive. The trial begins about 2/3 through the book and the pace slows to a crawl. We read long snippets of the trial transcript. Everything is rehashed for us in trial format, but none of the information is new. The experience left me feeling disconnected and bored, rather than involved or on the edge of my seat in suspense. By the time I arrived at the twist at the end, which should have been stunning, I breathed a sigh of relief that it was over.

This is certainly the most thorough of the English-language biographies of Johannes Brahms. MacDonald relates all known facts about the composer, his relationship with friends and acquaintances, and his music. Biography and creative output are interwoven throughout the book, as the author rather laboriously discusses each composition in chronological order. It is assumed that the reader has a fair knowledge of Brahms's works and can read music, for MacDonald includes 68 musical examples that are important to the discussion. MacDonald's verbose style may put off the casual reader, but for a real Brahms lover, the book is a treat.

MacDonald's Brahms

A colleague of mine noticed the picture of the young Brahms on the cover of MacDonald's biography. She remarked with surprise on his handsome, vigorous appearance. Too often people tend to think of Brahms as an old, bearded, somewhat overweight composer of conservative romantic music. The text of MacDonald's ambitious study, together with the cover portrait, aims to dispel stereotypes held by many about Brahms. For MacDonald, Johannes Brahms (1833 --1897) was an unabashedly romantic composer (granting the difficulties of defining that notoriously difficult term, "romantic"), with strong ties to the musical past who looked forward to and helped create the linear, contrapuntal, and decidedly unromantic music of the twentieth century. MacDonald's interest in the relationship between Brahms and Schoenberg is understandable as he has written a companion volume on Schoenberg for the "Master Musicians" series.

The book is both a biography of Brahms and a musical study with heavy emphasis on the latter. In the biographical sections of his account, MacDonald covers briefly Brahms's childhood in the rough, seafaring districts of Hamburg,his early musical instruction, and his wide reading. He describes Brahms's relationship with the Schumann's and the ambiguities of his lifelong love for Clara Schumann. There is a great deal of emphasis on Brahms's inability to marry, despite several flames in his youth. MacDonald describes how love and passion inform Brahms's work throughout and how music helped Brahms give voice to feelings that, for whatever reason, he could not express in his life.

MacDonald also places Brahms in a musical context that includes his extensive study of his predecessors, from his contemporaries through Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn, to the baroque and earlier. Brahms was undoubtedly the most musically learned of the great composers and he was able to integrate his learning with his own romantic voice. MacDonald finds that Brahms remained throughout his life a romantic composer. This means, I think, that Brahms saw music as an essentially spiritual calling, somewhat of a substitute for the role revealed religion plays in the lives of many, which emphasizes romantic and physical love, the unity of man with nature, and the value of the past. Bach used the past in his devotion to early music and to folksongs of many types. Brahms's romanticism, and the manner in which he integrated it with counterpoint and variation, paved the way for the destruction of romanticism and for the creation of a more recognizably modern sensibility.

I found the most valuable part of MacDonald's book to be the detailed analyses he offers of virtually all Brahm's major works. The discussion is presented chronologically. The musical discussions generally follow the biographical sections of the book and deal with Brahms's compositions by categories: orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, piano, song. MacDonald offers numerous musical examples, discusses the history of each work, and integrates each work nicely into a discussion of the entirety of Brahms's output.

Reading this book impressed upon me the wide variety of masterpieces Brahms composed during his life. MacDonald's accounts can be followed by the nonspecialist and give an inspiring picture of Brahms and his music. While reading, I thought of the works of Brahms with which I am familiar and wanted to revisit them in light of MacDonald's discussion. I also thought of the many works of Brahms I don't know but would love to explore in light of what I learned from the book. Little more can be asked from a musical study.

MacDonald writes with a deep affection for Brahms which he conveys well to his readers. He writes that Brahms "has been my favorite composer ever since I was old enough to think about music" (at x) and it shows in the deep thought and work represented in this study. MacDonald's closing discussion of Brahms's output captures well his view of Brahms. He writes: "Aware of the tragedies, paradoxes, and imponderables of existence, Brahms wrote to provide sustenance for the here and now. His music seeks to give beauty, nobility, a sense of meaning to the brute fact of human transience." (p. 401)

This is an outstanding study which should inspire the reader to hear Brahms, or to rehear him with an awakened heart.

MacDonald's "Brahms" is informative yet analitically lacking

MacDonald's biography of Brahms is insightful and informative benefiting from findings in recent Brahms scholarship as well as from the authors command of language and knowledge of the art of music. Its only fault, albeit a rather prominent one, is the author's need to comment at least a few words on every work of Brahms's. This becomes tedious and the reader is left with a feeling of unsatisfied curiosity as if he or she is reading program notes to a concert he will not hear. MacDonald, however, reserves his more detailed accounts for Brahms's more important and popular major works (his all too brief analysis of the Fourth Symphony leaves one wishing he would write a book entirely devoted to that masterpiece) a trait which reveals the author's keen analytical mind. The book would have benefited greatly if the author had devoted space given to smaller or less significant pieces to a more extensive discussion of the composers major works

Good enough and a good price.

A little disappointed that the book was used. It was my understanding I was ordering a new book. Since I saved a lot vs. the bookstore I am happy about that. However, in the used condition all of the review tests inside were completely filled out, which will be distracting for me when I need them for review....really people if you plan on re-selling your textbook you should have the courtesy to not write in pen! If you plan to keep them for reference pen ahead.

The only book I've seen of it's kind available in the USA....it is a highly detailed composition from a steam engineer's point of view.....not for the pure beginner...written in the 70's....some knowledge of metal working and model live steam engines helpful.....best part about book shows how to make steam whistles and laying track...however, the deep theory about how steam actually flows and the workings of the pipes inside the boilers was not very clear.....but a good book for hours of reading enjoyment.....worth the price for the serious or junior modeler.

All in all, this was a good book. The general info was very abundant, but the specific information was either sparse or non-existant. For example, he gives a wonderful nomenclature diagram of a locomotive, but when it comes to frames, he doesn't explain how to build them very well or where the critical points are.
This is definitely not a good book for a beginner. On the contrary, the chapter on whistles was very good, although still lacking some detail.

The information in this book makes up a great reference for building a locomotive, but doesn't give details on important topics. I would recomend anyone considering building a live steam locomotive have this book, but don't expect it to be the only reference at hand.
