The Beast in the Jungle concerns John Marcher, a neurotic egoist obsessed with the lurking feeling that something incredible is to happen to him. This impending fate has a predatory quality, like "a crouching beast in the jungle." Consumed with anticipation and dread, Marcher is unable to reciprocate the love of his long-suffering companion, May Bartram. She comes to see his fate but is unable to make him understand it before she dies. An engrossing tale

Henry James' Beast in the Jungle is surely not for everyone, there is little action in the novella (I suppose that is the point actually) and the title could give readers the wrong idea. John Marcher, the protagonist, is re-aquainted with May Bartram, a woman he knew ten years earlier, who remembers his odd secret- Marcher is seized with the belief that his life is to be defined by some catastrophic or spectacular event, lying in wait for him like a "beast in the jungle."
May decides to take a flat nearby in London, and to spend her days with Marcher curiously awaiting what fate has in stall for John. Of course Marcher is a self-centered egoist, believing that he is precluded from marrying so that he does not subject his wife to his "spectacular fate". So he takes May to the theatre and invites her to an occasional dinner, while not allowing her to really get close to him for her own sake. As he sits idly by and allows the best years of his life to pass, he takes May down as well, until the denouement wherein he learns that the great misfortune of his life was to throw it away, and to ignore the love of a good woman, based upon his preposterous sense of foreboding.
James' language can be a bit stilted at times, and some of the dialogue may strike modern readers as out-dated. However James was a master of the novella format, and with The Beast in the Jungle he has written an engrossing psychological drama, which left me speechless at the very end. Pick up a collection that also includes The Turn of the Screw and Daisy Miller if you haven't already read them, they are accessible (more so than some of James' full length novels) and great examples of the format's potential.

A glimpse into the soul

Henry James has always been one of my favorite writers even though many readers are put off by his very stylized writing. When I first read "The Beast in the Jungle", I must admit that I was completely blown away by its powerful message. This is a type of mystery that never loses its power although you already know the ending. There is no way to describe certain moments in the story that give us a glimpse into the very soul of these characters that manage to become real to us throughout this story. Marcher's incredible egotism blinds him from seeing the truth in his life and thereby destroying not only his own life, but also destroying the life of the woman who could have helped him learn how to live before it was too late. Henry James was a master writer and to quote the words of T.S. Eliot: "Henry James is a difficult writer for English readers because he is American, difficult for Americans because he is European, and I ignore if he is possible for other readers." Yes, Henry James can be a challenge for many readers, but the reward is all worth the effort.

And this story is not for the weak minded or those whose spirits shatter at the slightest confrontation. You, like John Marcher, will have the uncomfortable feeling that something Terrible, & Permanent is going to happen to you from reading this story. And you're right, but you don't know how right. The fate is something far worse than you think. Don't find yourself in a graveyard weeping over your May. You've been warned. This story is not dead paper and ink, or electrons over the internet. It waits for You to Enter The Jungle. And it is far better for some not to enter this Jungle, and be awakened to the Beast that even now watches you and prepares to leap.

Good intro to subject, but lacks examples and applications

A well written and concise introduction to the subject emphasizing the mathematical principles. This book concentrates on differential operators instead of series solutions of Schroedinger's equation making it a unique and valuable text. Ohanian shows the reader how to reduce a differential equation to a simple algebraic one using the factorization method. The text includes a very good bibliography with useful descriptions of other books. There are intra-chapter exercises designed to prepare you for the end of chapter problems, although not all of them are quite as straightforward as the author claims. The problem sets are longer and more varied than those in most other Q.M. texts and the answers to selected problems are in the back of the book. I have two major complaints about this text, each of which cost the book one star. First, there are no worked examples. Although Ohanian's explanations of the basic principles are very good, the lack of examples make some of the exercises unnecessarily difficult to solve and it forces the less mathematically gifted reader to seek another text to figure out how to complete the "straightforward exercises." Second, the book is lacking in applications. While I realize that no book could possibly adequately cover the many applications of Q.M., a few carefully written sections on specific applications would be helpful. If you need a good reference on differential operator techniques in Q.M., or a 2nd book to supplement your required text, this book could fill the bill. However, I would not recommend it as a primary text for the reasons discussed above.

First of all, Ohanian's text on " the principles of quantum mechanics" is one of the best texts available on "the operator method to quantum mechanics".

Traditionally, the introductory quantum mechanics texts usually begin with the historical overview of the old quantum theory or with the Schrodinger's PDE. Thus, Ohanian's text is not introductory text on QM at all! Instead, it can serve best as a text for one who has his first exposure to wave mechanics formalism of QM and historical overview of the old quantum mechanics. One with this background can appreciate the value of Ohanian's text on QM.

Ohanian's text on QM has a good section on "how to use the operator method to solve the hydrogen atom problem" which is hard to find in most texts at this level on QM.

In addition to his QM text, his books on "classical electrodynamics" and "gravitation and spacetime" are also unique, and worth reading, too.

What will be the outcome of the conflict between smugglers and revenue men? How can the hero, John Trenchard, discover the secret of Colonel John Mohune's treasure? As the book progresses these two interwoven themes resolve themselves into a third and richer one, with the friendship and suffering of both John Trenchard and the craggy, taciturn Elzevir Block. The novel is at once a well-paced account of dramatic action and a celebration of the unregainable freedoms of childhood, when, as Falkner's sister wrote in a memoir, 'there are no seasons, everything happens all the year round'. Falkner's feeling for history and for the landscape of his Dorset setting combine with his gift for storytelling to turn Moonfleet into a historical romance of moving intensity.

A Blast from the Past

Number me among the many who read this book in grade school back in the late 60's or 70's and the name stuck with me through the years.

Later as an adult, I returned to this book to read it anew and experience the magic again.

Yes, this is book designed for the younger reader. But as is the case with most well written books, all ages will find something to take away. Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc. are all of the same genre, but what makes Moonfleet unique is the tight identification of the young protagonist John Trenchard and the first person telling which brings the reader into seeing and experiencing it though his eyes.

For a book published in 1898 and set in 1757 and following, that youth in the 60's would find it so fascinating and real is a testament to the talent of Falkner.

Timeless. Engaging. Intriguing. Fantastic!

Did I mention that I like it and recommend it heartily?

Moonfleet Should Be Better Known

MOONFLEET is a novel that might have been written by Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens together, although in fact it was written by John Meade Falkner. I first read it in high school and was very pleased to find it available on Kindle. It is a fast-moving novel narrated by a man looking back at his boyhood and early manhood with the kind of regret Robinson Crusoe had, although in many ways his sufferings were far greater.

I would recommend it for all teenagers who have an interest in reading, and for those whose interest needs to be stimulated.

It's 1757. Fifteen-year old John Trenchard is bored living with his Aunt Jane in the shoreline village of Moonfleet in England - unitl his discovery of a secret thrusts him into a fugitive existence. The relatively dullish opening sets you up for a rivetting adventure, complete with "ghosts," an underground tunnel, smugglers, and the quest for a pirate's jewel treasure. Very atmospheric. Very intriguing.

Figley (Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University) is the Paul Henry Kurzweg, MD Distinguished Chair in Disaster Mental Health at Tulane University and a Professor in the Tulane Graduate School of Social Work. He is also director of the award-winning Traumatology Institute. The Institute was recognized in 2000 as the best program of its kind by the University Continuing Education Association. He is a former Fulbright Fellow and was a Professor in the College of Social Work at Florida State University before moving to Tulane University in July 2008. Dr. Figley is also a psychologist and family therapist and was a Professor of Family Therapy and Psychology at Purdue University (1974-1989). He is founding editor of the Journal of Traumatic Stress and currently editor of the journal Traumatology, published by SAGE Publications. Dr. Figley has written more than 200 scholarly works, including 19 books, most of which have focused on stress, resiliency, and coping. His first book, Stress Disorder Among Vietnam Veterans (1978), focused on combat stress and is credited as helping to establish the modern era of traumatology. In his subsequent books, he has continually expanded his focus to other traumatizing contexts.

Tony DeRamus is the CEO of SMA International, a company devoted to addressing the rampant abuse of marijuana worldwide by training, coaching and educating counselors and users through various mediums such as books, internet, and seminars. I'm not a major stoner, but I used to smoke more than my best self would like to. I thought buying this book would be more educational, but I believe I stumbled into the wrong wheel house. THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO QUIT, hardly for those who are just wanting more self evaluation. Aside from that statement, the book is okay. Dr. Tony puts each sentence simply, which might be best for some, but it doesn't dive in as deep as I would like. I don't think he fished out all of the pros/cons of smoking weed, but I think that might be because it was written back in a time when weed had a more negative connotation and that giving weed the justice it deserves might be bad for someone who is trying to quit. Overall it's a good general book on quitting, but might look elsewhere for a more in depth analysis of why people smoke and why they might want to consider a more moderate approach.

So..I don't normally write reviews but I feel that this one's worth the time. I've been a daily pot smoker for about 10 years and never really thought of it as an addiction. The reason why I really love this book is because I can feel a connection with Dr.Tony and it seems he really understands me and the kind of smoker I am...I'm barely on day 11 (which is a BIG deal) but I already feel like I'm accomplishing more. I'm actually getting to SEE the world and my family as they are. Not with "high-sight." I am so happy that I found this book and would recommend it to any pot smoker, whether you've smoked for 10 years or 2 years, it's really awesome to get to relate to someone who you don't have to be on the same "level" as. Thanks doc. I can't wait for you to write your next one!

Pretty weak

In the book, the authors explain how they spent two months near Dinosaur, staying at an RV park, while they wrote this book. They did a few driving tours, walked a couple trails, went down the river as paying customers with a commercial outfitter, talked to a couple rangers, and made a book out of it. That's all fine and well, but the book comes up pretty short as a guidebook to Dinosaur.

This book is mostly fluff and some driving directions. I do not recommend this book.
