Perfect written version of the famous film

This book is the written version of the great ballet film, THE RED SHOES. If you love the movie you'll love the book, and maybe even love it a little bit more than the movie (if that's possible) just because you get fuller character background and description of the stories of Vicky, Julian, etc. (Being able to know Vicky's thoughts during her first dance of 'The Red Shoes' ballet is great. When I went back and watched the movie, I was able to do so with a little more "inside knowledge" of what was going on in her head.) These characters and their conflicts seem very real -- which goes to show that Michael Powell and Emric Pressburger were excellent writers, as well as excellent filmmakers.

gave it 8/10) but a marvellous story of a film that
made thousands of little girls want to be ballet dancers.

After buying the movie first, I decided to get the book which was better than the film. Isn't that the way it is though. I found so many little facts that they left out of the movie since the book was written 30 years after the film production, Differences like: Boris asks Julian to stay with the company and Vicky totally ignores this marvelous act of grace given to them but goes off with her new lover to London leaving Boris flat with no Prima ballerina. If they had stayed in Monte Carlo with the Ballet Lermontov, maybe she would not have died in the end. But, then again, it is just a fictional story. I really liked the book. The story is pure fantasy with some reality mixed up in one great film with lovely ballets and sweet first love. Romance fills the air. Love blooms and dies. It is so like real life. Hardly a fair tale at all. It will always be my favorite film of all time. Thank you M. Powell and E. Pressburger. Our hats are off to you both!

One of the greatest books I have ever read

It truly is a live changing book. I am only 19, but this book has been one of the true foundations I will use for the rest of my life. It has opened up and entire world into understanding and securing my culture. It is a shame not many people will be able to read it, especially my age group. I am trying to get my friends to pick it up, but it is a battle.

I reccommend this for any reader! Do yourself a favor!

At first glance, I thought certainly I would be disappointed with this book. Not only was it short (and expensive), but broken down into many "sub-chapters". Fortunately I was wrong.
The author begins the book with a necessarily abbreviated synopsis of the history of cultural memory. He then examines how the invention of writing, the printing press, the television, and the internet affect cultural memory.
After establishing that there is a decline in America's basic education level and collective understanding of our culture's history, the author thouroughly examines root causes. He also talks about how losing a sense of cultural heritage, as well as the transfer of basic educational information can negatively affect the U.S.
This book is thoroughly researched, well organized, and ties together well many seemingly unrelated topics.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you are, like me, intent on examining why our mainstream American culture is so mind-boggling ignorant

This is precisely what my child needed. It didn't cost anything to deliver here however because of the weight it was truly costly to send abroad!! That was my issue, not theirs. "The Jewish State" and "The New-Old Land" by Theodore Herzl
and "Trial and Error" (In two volumes) by Weizmann.
The "Jewish Home" that they worked so hard to make a reality bears almost no resemblance
to the current-day (2016) Israel. These books should be read by all Zionists and anti-Zionists alike.

Just the Facts

Having only a general knowledge of the ripper murders of the late 19th century, I was looking for a book that could fill in some of the details and distinguish between the known and the speculative. In this regards, the author succeeds. Mr. Rumbelow begins by giving us an overview of the East End in general and Whitechapel in particular since these are the areas in which the murders occurred. We learn about the population size, the number of poor, and other relevant socioeconomic facts. After this concise introduction to 1888 London and its environs, we move right into the murders themselves.

The author does a good job of distilling the facts associated with each of the five confirmed murders. We learn of the sad living conditions of the victims, their lowly states, and the brutality of their murders. We, of course, also learn a bit about Jack the Ripper along the way. The most definitive thing we learn is how he kills. To wit, he strangles his victims, puts them in a prone position, and then mutilates them with what is presumably a surgical knife of some kind. Somewhat surprisingly, it would seem that everything else that is related to the ripper lacks this kind of clarity. For example, although a general consensus exists that the killer had some anatomical knowledge and surgical skill, there is not complete unanimity by all that were involved in the case. Also, while newspapers and the police were flooded with letters claiming either to be the ripper or to know who he was, we know that only a couple of the letters are suspected to have actually come from the ripper himself. Do these letters, which were written in a coarse style, tell us the ripper was poorly educated or merely pretending to be so? If the former, then how does that square with the belief that the killer had anatomical and surgical skills? Could he have been a butcher of some kind? We just don't know and this book, unfortunately, can't tell us.

In addition to the murder details, we also learn of the intensive police investigation. The police were hamstrung at the time by the lack of scientific and forensic tools that we now possess. Remember that not only did DNA testing not exist; even blood typing had yet to make an appearance. Nonetheless, the police did what they could. Perhaps as a City of London policeman, Mr. Rumbelow is a bit biased, but he paints a picture of the police doing a competent job (informing the public, increasing patrols, setting traps, withholding key pieces of information, etc.) given the constraints they faced (e.g., territorial disputes between the city of London police and the Metropolitan police). However, this is not to say that no mistakes were made. One notable example is the Metropolitan police commissioner personally erasing a message that the ripper is believed to have scrawled on a wall for fear that anti-Jewish sentiment could spark a riot. While the message was written down, there is some question as to whether it was accurately transcribed. Had Sir Charles Warren been willing to wait just one hour more, a photograph could have been taken for later study.

It's really the second half of the book that falters and has given rise to my three star rating. Many pages are spent discussing seven suspects or so. While some discussion is warranted, the 100 pages seem excessive. This is especially so when you consider that we ultimately do not know the identity of the culprit and Mr. Rumbelow seems skeptical of the suspects that he presents. Additionally, the author spends a good deal of time discussing "ripper" murders that have occurred in the 20th century. The problem is that notwithstanding the fact that these killers may have been dubbed "rippers" by the press or public, they bear little resemblance to the 18th century East End killings. They may all have been serial killers, but the latter-day murderers did not confine themselves to one section of town, prey exclusively on prostitutes, or mutilate their victims in the way that the original ripper did. Taking all of this into consideration, the coverage of Jack the Stripper, the Dusseldorf Ripper, and the Yorkshire Ripper appears superfluous.

Despite the criticism, this is still a very good introduction to Jack the Ripper for those who have little or no knowledge of the specifics of the killings. This book was originally published in 1975 and the edition I read was from 1988. There are probably some Ripperologists who feel that a book of this vintage is outdated, but I'm not convinced we know much more now then we did twenty years ago. It's true that there have been those who claim to have discovered the identity of the real Jack the Ripper (notably Patricia Cornwell), but the suspects and a large portion of the evidence against them are included in this book and we still don't have any forensics to positively identify any person as the killer. Therefore, I recommend this book to those interested in the case, but I also caution that this is probably not a good read for the squeamish. Many of the killings are necessarily described in graphic fashion and there are even some morgue and crime scene photos.

Highly recommended as an introduction to the subject

This was not the very first book I ever read about Jack the Ripper but it is the first I purchased in the 30 odd books I currently own. I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time I read it and have re-read it several times ever since. Mr Rumbelow, an ex-London Police officer, has a very pleasant and entertaining writing style and he covers his chosen material very well.

There are certainly a lot of books in my collection that deal with the murders far more comprehensively and in more detail than in this fairly short work but that is part of the charm of the book and the reason that it is so eminently suited to persons approaching the subject for the first time. Rumbelow reviews the basic facts concerning the murders popularly attributed to Jack the Ripper, briefly identifies some of the main suspects, and introduces some of the other main players in the drama. There is not a wealth of detail concerning this witness or that, or an exhaustive review of forensic evidence, but Rumbelow efficiently covers the basics and allows the beginner to become familiar with the essentials.

Naturally, since the original edition is over thirty years old, it cannot cover some of the more recent developments on Ripper theory - the putative Maybrick diary or the Cornwell investigation, for example - but this in no way diminishes the value of the work. Rumbelow gives us a simple, down to earth review of the facts as they developed at the time and he explains the reasons why people believed what they did (and how they reacted) as those various facts came to light.

In addition to providing a fine overview of the essential elements of the case, Rumbelow also begins with a well-written and very sobering introduction to the East end of London in the late nineteenth century. He briefly examines serial killers both before and after the Ripper and takes a good look at the legacy of the Ripper murders in popular culture. He then reviews the major figures advanced s suspects up to the date of publication and explains why none can seriously be regarded as having been the Ripper. Ultimately, he quite reasonably concludes that the only thing we can really be sure of about Jack the Ripper is that he is dead...

If you are looking for a good introduction to the murders of Jack the Ripper you would be best to avoid books that claim to have *finally* solved the mystery, or advance this or that person as the only good candidate for the killer. My advice would be to start here instead.

About the Author

Shiu-Kai Chin is a Meredith Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University. He is also director of the Center for Information and Systems Assurance and Trust. While at Syracuse, Dr. Chin has received the Outstanding Teacher Award, the Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to the University’s Academic Programs, and the Crouse Hinds Award for Excellence in Education.

Susan Older is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University. She is also the program director for the Certificate of Advanced Study in Systems Assurance. Dr. Older’s research interests include programming-language semantics, logics of programs, formal methods, and information-assurance and computer science education.

Excellent text for computer security

I teach a graduate course in information security. One of the headaches that I confront when teaching this course is the choice of reading material for the students. Matt Bishop's tome is encyclopedic, but it doesn't present enough depth in any particular subject for my grad class. Usually, I end up just assigning published research articles. This choice is OK, but less than ideal.

Then along came this text. It applies modal logic to access control security models, policies and mechanisms. Although it concerns mathematical logics for security, it seems to be require just a bit of mathematical maturity to understand---my (non-logician) students get it without much trouble. I just started using this text for my class and will continue to do so.

Hello, my name is Emilee Day and I was born and raised in New York City and now live in sunny San Diego, California! I have the pleasure of working as a therapist with teens and their families counseling to address a wide range of emotional and social issues. My experience as a therapist and interest in educating teens and parents on developmental and emotional issues has inspired me to become an author. My hope is that I can provide some insight and knowledge to those in need based on my valuable experience and educational background. In my free time I participate in yoga, volunteer at a local animal shelter, travel, play the piano and compete in marathons. I also have an affinity for vintage dresses and puzzles.

‘To me, writing in a journal is a kind of secret weapon to deal with whatever life throws at you.’

California author Emilee Day works as a therapist with teens and their families counseling to address a wide range of emotional and social issues, educating teens and parents on developmental and emotional issues. The result of that experience? This book and others that serve to inspire us all to be our best we can be.

Emilee follows her instincts and directs this book of ‘therapy’ to readers in their young adulthood, hoping to instill a pattern of coping with life using the technique of keeping a journal. As she states, ‘Your daily writing habit will help you feel better about yourself during years of self-doubt and uncertainty about who you really are and how you relate to the world around you, gain a more positive perspective on life by developing an awareness of events that are happening to you, give you a place to air your deepest responses to the experiences and people you encounter, and in the process, lift the burden from your mind.

In the first part of her book she addresses the follow - Why You Should Start Journaling Now, How to Get Started, How to Overcome Roadblocks in Your Journaling Habit, What Happens if You Lose Your Journal?, Do You Prefer Handwriting Your Journal or Going Digital?, and How to Keep Up with Your Journaling Practice. it has a lot of great advice, and encouragement

This book came up in my search for a journaling book for a 6th / 7th grade student facing some emotional difficulties. Based on the bits I read, it has a lot of great advice, and encouragement, which is the key to doing so many things. Unfortunately, the writing did not seem geared toward a middle school student. I would welcome some feedback from anyone who has given this book to a middle school kid.

About the Author
Jeffrey C. Alexander is a Professor at the depatment of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has been a Fellow at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies and at SCASSS in Sweden. His other books include "Twenty Lectures: Sociological Theory since World War Two" (Columbia, 1987); "Action and its Environments" (Columbia, 1988); "Fin-de-Siecle Social Theory" (Verso, 1995); "Neofunctionalism" (Sage, 1985), "Culture and Society: Contemporary Debates" (with Steven Seidman, Cambridge, 1990).

M. Jacqui Alexander is Professor of Women??'s Studies and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto. She is a coeditor of Sing, Whisper, Shout, Pray! Feminist Visions for a Just World and Feminist Genealogies, Colonial Legacies, Democratic Futures.

Mohanty is my hero

This book is incredible. Seriously. I had the pleasure of reading this book for a course and I'll admit that it is one of the only texts in my college career that I have gone back a read multiple times. Especially the beginning, and the essays about the indigenous peoples of north america or the Native Americans. This book opened my mind up on so many issues that I can't even begin to explain. It is dated, but it is still great writing a relevant. It has both heavy theoretical and practical which makes it a great text for a 4000 level class on global feminist politics.

Resourceful and Thought-Provoking

This is a challenging book, but as an edited volume, can be read slowly. A familiarization with writings on the distribution of global capital would be helpful, but if you don't have that background, the introduction to the book outlines some of the major points.
There are some great articles in this volume: one on sexualized flight attendant uniforms in Singapore, one on tourism being based on heterosexuality, one on the role of the cinema in shaping ideas of gender and nationhood, and one on how the concept of "sovereignty" applies to Native American politics in the US.
From my own experience teaching, I agree this volume is very difficult for most undergraduate students, but this is because they lack the vocabulary to understand what they are reading and to discuss it critically. The book would work well in a class that is focused around globalization and transnationalism, or in an honors level seminar.

By focusing the feminist eye on the transnational and "post-colonial" nations, Alexander offers an opening. . .a way to experience other cultures and transcend our own social locations. Her argument reveals that just because a nation is no longer under direct colonial control, it does not mean that the effects of the colonial mindset have diminshed. We all hold inherited ideologies about what we are. . .but that does not necessarily put us in a victim position. We all have agency, however we exercise this power in different ways. An amazing book that should be read so that the experience of feminism will be seen as what it really is, and not bounded by our ideas of "Women Power" residing in the white, middle-class agenda.
