Good scope; figures and index fall short

For a cross-disciplinary mathematical biologist who is to be an end-user of cardiac models, this book gave a quick introduction to electrocardiograms, electromechanics, and pertinent computing algorithms. It provides worked examples which should be useful in conjunction with a dedicated course book e.g. on partial differential equations. Regrettably, many terms and abbreviations used in the text are absent in the index, detracting from the book's value as a quick reference. The illustrations could be much better, considering the multidimensional, multivariate nature of the system. Instead, they suffer from unlabeled axes, nonuniform color maps in multi-panel figures, or wasteful use of color plates where different linestyles would suffice. All in all, not a feast for the eye but a reasonably concise, fairly well-structured primer on a specific sub-area of a huge research field.

Great Book for the people in computational cardiology. I used this book to make the necessary code to make the programming to simulate ECG's. Although it uses complex mathematics an engineer can follow the procedure without any problem.

I have read Yelena Khanga�s story several times in the past several years. Leaning something different each time that I read it. Her wit and her humor are outstanding given the time she was writing about. It was a time of great history for both nations as well as both cultures. She looks through the eyes of an individual of great wonder. A person ho looks around and sees a world change. Meeting her new �family� that under given circumstances would have been the enemy was a great delight to read.
I encourage her to write a sequel to the book. I hope to meet her one day. Sit down in a café and drink Chi.

Amazing story of African-Russian-Jewish-American lady!

Do you know there were Americans and African-Americans who long time( in 20-s and 30-s) ago traveled to Russia for a job opportunity during Depression? Some of them come back and some stayed. This story about family which stayed. Why? Do you know what could happened to the people at that old time if one of them were White and another Black? There were other reasons too.
You are the Lucky ones to get that book and read it because people in Russia can't! I checked it out.
I am same age and grow up in the same place with the Author Yelena Khanga, I can relate pretty much to that story. Yelena is a celebrity in Russia. Her family were friends with Stalin's daughter.
I was amazed of her family story and how she learned what it means to be African-American in US in 90-s.
You might better appreciate your ancestors after you reed this book.
I would love to have a cup of Tea with her one day too.

About the Author

Harry R. Allcock is Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of London. After holding postdoctoral positions at Purdue University and the National Research Council of Canada, he spent five years as a polymer research scientist in American industry before joining The Pennsylvania State University in 1966. Trained initially as a mechanistic organometallic chemist, his research interests have included the synthesis of new organic and inorganic polymers, the use of inorganic and organometallic compounds as polymerization initiators, radiation-induced polymerizations, ring-chain equilibria, organosilicon compounds, and the structural examination of polymers by X-ray diffraction, NMR, and conformational analysis techniques. A major interest throughout his career has been the design and synthesis of new biomedical materials. He and his coworkers synthesized the first stable polyphosphazenes, and his research group has been responsible for many of the major developments in this field. His pioneering research has been recognized by numerous awards including the American Chemical Society National Awards in Polymer Chemistry and Materials Chemistry, and the A.C.S Polymer Division Herman Mark Award in Polymer Science. He is also a Guggenheim Fellow and a recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Chemical Pioneer Award. He has held a number of visiting lectureships, has published three research monographs, co-authored three other volumes, and co-edited three additional books. Professor Allcock has authored or co-authored more than 440 research papers and reviews, holds 54 patents, and has trained more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral students in his laboratory.

Frederick W Lampe (1927-2000) was a Professor of Chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University. Professor Lampe was born in Chicago. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, and later received a B.S. degree from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University. He then spent seven years as a research scientist with the Humble Oil and Refining Company in Texas before moving to Penn State in 1960. Professor Lampe was a physical chemist whose polymer interests were in the areas of radiation-induced polymerizations, kinetics of polymerization processes, application of mass spectrometry to polymer degradation processes, statistical mechanics, and molecular weight methods. He was also interested in gaseous ion reactions, photochemistry, and the effects of ionizing radiation on materials. He was the author or co-author of over 160 research papers and review articles, and held five patents on polymer chemistry and radiation chemistry. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and at the Hahn-Meitner Nuclear Research Institute in Berlin. His honors included the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, a National Science Foundation Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship, and a Robert A. Welch Lecturship. Professor Lampe also served for five years as the Head of the Chemistry Department at Penn State.

James E. Mark was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Wilkes College and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. After serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University with Professor Paul J. Flory, he was an Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn before moving to the University of Michigan, where he became a Full Professor in 1972. In 1977 he assumed the position of Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati, where he was Chairman of the Physical Chemistry division and Director of the Polymer Research Center. In 1987 he was named to the first Distinguished Professorship at Cincinnati. Dr. Mark's research interests include the physical chemistry of polymers, elasticity of polymer networks, liquid crystalline polymers, hybrid organic-inorganic composites, and a variety of computer simulations. He has lectured widely on polymer chemistry, is a consultant to industry, and has organized a number of polymer-related short courses. He has published over 600 research papers and has coauthored or coedited eighteen books. Among his awards are the A.C.S Applied Polymer Science Award and the A.C.S. Polymer Division Paul. J. Flory Polymer Education Award, the Whitby Award, and the Charles Goodyear Medal from the A.C.S Rubber Division. He is the founding Editor of the journal Computational and Theoretical Polymer Science and serves on the Editorial Boards of a number of other journals. He has also been a Turner Alfrey Visiting Professor and has received the Edward W Morley Award from the A.C.S. Cleveland Section.

A good book on Polymer Chemistry

I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter.

Not a good polymer chemistry book...

This book is indeed full of errors. The kinetic sections were too unorganized and full of errors. The kinetics were frustrating enough without the formulas being wrong in the first place. Also, the book will derive multiple ways of solving for the same thing and bury what you really need to understand the concepts. The synthesis, nomenclature and production sections were okay at best. I will say this though, by having such a bad book I really learned a lot trying to sift out the information that was needed.

Polymer Class Textbook

This book is an ok read, I actually bought it for one of my POlymer Chemistry Classes. It's not as dry as some textbooks i've read, but it is a bit confusing at times. The problems at the end of the chapters definitely help to see if you understand the concepts.

Terrific Book for Journalists, Citizen Activists, Others

If you shape your political opinions based on what's reported in the news, you owe it to yourself to know more about how the news is reported. Mediactive is not only a great guide to the way journalism is conducted by the establishment media, but also a great guide to the way journalism *should be* conducted (see especially Chapter 8, "If I Ran a News Organization, Part 2"). It will help interested journalists do their jobs with greater integrity, and will better enable an engaged citizenry to recognize the difference between journalism, on the one hand, and stenography, propaganda, and other forms of deceit, on the other. An excellent read for bloggers, citizen journalists, professional journalists, and all consumers of the news, and I highly recommend it.

Tips for consuming--and producing--media

In 2004, Dan Gillmor wrote "We the Media", one of the first books to illuminate the role of "citizen journalists". "Mediactive" should be seen as a follow-on to "We the Media", not an update or sequel. It's split into three major sections: Media literacy, Media creation, and, for lack of a better term, "Other". The first section is essential reading for anyone, but it would be particularly valuable for high school and college students who are still learning how to judge whether a story is valid or an information source is reliable. The second section starts with a high-level overview of citizen journalism and dives into the nuts & bolts of blogging, Twitter and other means of self-publishing. This section is written primarily for novice citizen journalists; if you've been doing it for a while, you already know most of what Gillmor says.

The third section is, in my opinion, the least useful part of the book. It starts with a review of the laws and norms governing journalism and communications in the U.S., but it's at best an overview of the issues that any journalist should be aware of. Then, it jumps into a discussion of teaching and learning media literacy and journalism, and concludes with what needs to change in order to improve the practice of journalism. As Gillmor himself admits, the latter topic alone deserves its own book, and that's the problem with the final section of "Mediactive". Each of the last three chapters would work much better as separate books, and there are books that you can buy on the three subject areas that are much more comprehensive than the information that Gillmor gives in a single chapter.

In short, I strongly recommend "Mediactive" if you or someone you know is serious about developing media literacy skills, and moderately recommend it if you're interested in citizen journalism. If the topics in the last three chapters are of serious interest, you'd do better by buying books dedicated to the topics.

Painter Lucian's daughter, Sigmund's great-granddaughter and an accomplished novelist herself (Hideous Kinky), Freud invokes her father's family history in this splendidly written, evocative novel. Inspired by the letters of her grandfather, the architect Ernst Freud, she weaves an elegantly paced, double-stranded narrative set in the English coastal village of Steerborough. In the present, 20-something grad student Lily retreats to Steerborough for the summer with a bundle of letters that architect Klaus Lehman wrote to his wife, Elsa. Her story alternates with that of a group of German-Jewish emigres, including Klaus, Elsa and the deaf painter Max Meyer, who summer in Steerborough in 1953. While Lily pores over Klaus's adoring but paternalistic, bullying letters, she and her workaholic architect boyfriend Nick, living in London, are nearly incommunicado. "The men she knew didn't seem to feel the need to so utterly possess their women," Lily muses, somewhat regretfully. Between infrequent, strained visits from Nick, Lily makes a pretense at work, suns, swims and befriends the little girls next door—and their virile, working-class father. Freud depicts postwar Steerborough from the point of view of Max and his hostess, Gertrude Jilks, an English child psychoanalyst and friend of his recently deceased sister, Kaethe. As Max hungers for the beautiful Elsa while mourning Kaethe and the immeasurable loss of his life and family in Germany—a subtext Freud renders all the more powerful with slow, subtle revelations—he paints every house in the village, creating a scroll that Lily will one day discover on exhibition. The novel's setting is smalltown, but its thematic scope is generous: from Old World jealous love to modern-day commitment issues, art, psychoanalysis, dislocation and yearning for home. Though the culmination of the love stories feels too deliberately plotted, Freud has constructed her novel with beautiful precision.

In Freud's fifth novel, a young woman arrives in a small English seacoast village to research a thesis about a German architect who lived and worked there. While poring over his passionate letters to his wife (letters that raise questions about her own relationship with a man back in London), she becomes involved with the fractious family next door. Interspersed through this narrative is one concerning events decades earlier, when an artist visiting from London starts to make paintings of every house in the village and falls for the architect's wife. A dreamlike atmosphere pervades, rather at the expense of vivid characterization, but Freud's gift for natural description is such that she manages to turn the village's seaside topography into a sentient being, with its own stores of memory and malice.

Freud's fourth novel addresses the power of the artistic muse, but above all it is steeped in the landscape of Steerborough, a tiny British seaside village that is home to two complex casts of characters who live there 50 years apart. Klaus Lehmann, a Jewish architect and German emigre, writes letters to his wife from 1931 until his death in 1953. The letters end up in the hands of a present-day architecture student writing her thesis on Lehmann who rents a cottage in Steerborough to better soak up the creative atmosphere surrounding her famous subject. The time periods are soon revealed to have more than just letters in common, as Freud adroitly ties them together with matching threads of sexual liaisons, children forced to grow up too soon, and natural disaster. Some characters are fleshed out more carefully than others, but no reader will soon forget Freud's rhapsodic descriptions of the village or its inhabitants, who, like the weather, are alternately morose and incandescent. Normal for Suffolk

It may unfair to Esther Freud to begin a review by pointing out that she is the great-granddaughter of you-know-who, but it would be unfair to the reader not to mention it, because one of the themes is the German-Jewish refugee experience in England and one of her characters is a psychoanalyst. The author adds to the relevance of her personal background by providing a list of acknowledgements at the end that almost suggests we have been reading a roman a clef.

There are two main settings, seaside communities on opposite shores of the North Sea. One is a meticulously described East Anglian village, Steerborough, the other a German island (which might actually be in the Baltic).

The two main plots are set 50 years apart in time. One is the story, set in the fifties, of a refugee architect, Klaus, and his wife, Elsa, the other is the story of Lily,a student of architectural history, who is studying the life and work of Klaus and worrying about her relationship with her London architect lover, Nick.

Several other plots are interlinked. Lily gets involved with Grae who is desperately trying to care for two young daughters, Emm and Arry, reminiscent of the wonderful ones in "Hideous Kinky," and who may or may not be the guilty party in his violent relationship with their mother. Elsa has an affair with the deaf artist Max, who is painting a panorama of Steerborough.

It sounds complicated, and there are many subtleties and nuances that will repay a second reading, but the characters are so well demarcated, their dialog is so realistic, and their actions flow so naturally from their personalities, that it is never hard to follow for pure entertainment.

Lovely, romantic, and touching

Though the twin stories took a while to clarify themselves in this reader's mind, once they did, the novel was quietly hypnotic as it wove together themes of loss, love, and historic tragedy. Set in a seaside English town today and in the early 50s, the book is suffused by a sense of isolation and longing, of human insignificance in the face of the limitless waters that can erase whole cities over time. The prose was beautiful and I read many passages over to savor the author's vision.

Slow and Dull

This novel starts out very slow and uninteresting and only barely picks up. It paints vivid pictures of the coastal town and even of the characters in a physical way. But the main part of the story, the relationships, falls flat and remains ambiguous. With the interesting lives led by all the characters, in both timelines, so much more could have been developed. The actions of Lily, Max, and Elsa all seem random and without any motivation. It did offer interesting information about Germany and it's peoples lives before and during WWII.
